It’s a shame that the few need to ruin it for the many. But it’s not just scumbag teens that are lethal on these things. I’ve seen grown men and women in office attire bombing it weaving in and out of moving traffic. It’s a joke.

Garda Commissioner will support anything that means less work for them or doesn’t require nuance or effort.
Since when are we just asking the Guards their opinions on laws all the time?? Their job is to enforce the law, not advise the government, not make moral declarations. They also recently came out and condemned the *comprehensive evidence-led* approach to drug decriminalisation.
They are not legislators and frankly their opinion is irrelevant. We put way too much stock in the opinions of Gardaí.
What they need is a few high profile cases of people being prosecuted, that would concentrate minds.
The guards weren’t willing to enforce the ban before they were legalised. The guards aren’t enforcing the rules now.
Besides, before these became the mode of transport beloved by some rule breakers, those kids were going for overpowered folding ebikes. They’d just go back to those and the problem of people speeding around and breaking the law on them would remain. it’s not that the escooter are inherently evil or something.
These people are so out of touch with reality. Could you imagine the same argument been made about any other form of transport? These are a legitimate form of transport for thousands of people that we should be doing all we can to promote and provide infrastructure for them not shouting „think of the children“ like idiots.
Yeah but will they enforce it?
They weren’t really being enforced before, they’re barely being enforced now and they still won’t be enforced when they’re banned.
So the only thing it will achieve is to impact on the people who will respect a ban and it’ll do nothing for the people who are currently the problem as they’ll just scoot away and the gardai still won’t be allowed to chase or stop them.

So every other country can have them but not us? How about actually enforcing the existing laws. How’d the ban on scramblers go?
Soundbites! Grace’s law has shown they won’t do anything on scramblers, i’ve never seen them stop anyone on escooters and they’re everyone. If they ban them they will just be bought in the north. What a load of nonsense!
They never enforced it before the current laws were introduced, they haven’t enforced it with the current laws in place and won’t enforce it with any been laws legislated.. ridiculous

What’s gonna happen is law abiding citizens who use them to attend work and obey the rules will be the main ones getting penalised, but the balaclava dark cloths youths who use them for drug trafficking will continue to do what they’re currently doing. Since graces law passed, I’ve seen a number of scramblers on footpaths, weaving in and out of cars and sadly no legislation is out allowing the guards to chase them in fear of the DPP taking a case against them with prosecution.
And what about the people who use them legally and well within the law to commute to work? This is a case of brushing under the carpet what should be a job to our absolutely useless police force. The Garda are an embarrassment and utter disgrace to the country.
Crazy for him to mention hi-vis then when he is talking about just enforcing the law. There is no legal requirement to wear a hi-vis

the government need to move with the times and build sustainable cities that actually work for the people and for the way people want to commute instead of becoming increasingly authoritarian and criminalising non-car centric lifestyle
It’s so unbelievably lazy, they are just giving up. Regulate it properly.
The same way scramblers are illegal?
Should part of the solution here not be able to promoting safe use of the things until it becomes the norm like seatbelts or wearing a helmet on a bike?
It feels lazy to say that the laws should just be enforced and even lazier to just ban them. Proper education is needed here on the risks involved in the use of the things.

Garda Commissioner should not be weighing in on Policy. Similar to the drug decriminalisation debate, he is a public servant, his job is to enforce the law not to create it.

The argument is not great, could be used for cars and lots of other things.
Would be nice to ask what’s the police plan if e-scooters get banned and people ignore the ban and continue to use then anyway.

This is ridiculous ffs. There’s already tens of thousands of these e scooters in the country already, if not more, why should they be made illegal for the people that purchased them in good faith not knowing it could become fucking illegal shortly thereafter.
If they ban e scooters, would e bicycles be next or what? I don’t understand wtf their thinking here
