Basel Zoo has euthanised Mobali, an 11-year-old male gorilla, following serious injuries that prevented him from urinating. The dominant male, Yeba, aged 14, had bitten him in the penis.

The Ape exhibit at Basel Zoo is depressing. They are always just sleeping on the concrete.
Also what a shitty end-of-life experience for Mobali, the deceased ape. He lived a miserable existence for a decade, then the Basel Zoo introduces a new male ape, Yeba, last year who enforces his dominance by biting off Mobali’s penis, leading to Basel Zoo euthanizing the wounded gorilla. This never would have happened if they didn’t introduce the new ape. In the wild, the submissive ape can always run away for their lives, but no such choice in captivity.

Ugh heart breaking.. I remember visiting not too long ago and seeing a gorilla with a giant gash on their leg, I mean you could see the red flesh and everything. Told a zoo keeper nearby and he replied thats just normal between gorillas.. I shudder to think that that was Mobali.
