Election distrust mobilizes conservatives, while liberals participate regardless of trust
Recent research published in the journal Party Politics suggests that a person’s underlying political beliefs strongly influence whether doubting the integrity of an election will drive them to participate in politics outside of the voting booth.
The findings indicate that conservative voters tend to become more politically active when they distrust election systems, whereas liberal voters tend to participate at higher rates regardless of their trust levels.

So, members of the Democratic party show implicit trust in the democratic process, while Republicans don’t? Fascinating.
Reddit:
Studies consistently show that conservatives are dumb, bad and insecure, and liberals are smart and good.
No sh*t that a group of people as readily hateful and easily susceptible to propaganda as conservatives would *only* participate in Democracy out of fear or spite
Conservatives should boycott elections if they don’t trust them, not vote more.
Now tell them part about how conservatives (who are fully regressive btw fyi) get it in their head that despite zero supportive evidence believe liberals are cheating and thus, puts the regressive (just stop it with thinking they’re conservative) voter into thinking that in order to secure a win that they have to committ voter fraud.
Try asking them about the *scale* of the voter fraud and watch the gymnastics as they do everything they can to avoid the question.
Makes sense. Don’t believe the votes actually matter so you make sure to get your vote in. They aren’t usually the brightest bunch.
Meanwhile I trust the system because I’ve seen the system actively do adversarial audits and find such small amounts, we know it’s just being used as theater.
They need to do this study again when Trump isn’t a nominee, or actually anywhere close to the American political system.
Trump has created a very loyal movement unlike any other, so any study of that movement has to take that into consideration.
Or when someone in authority lies about it repeatedly, people believe it.
. Doesn’t explain why 50% of people just don’t even turn out.
To note: this is referring to non-voting political activities like making signs and stuff.
Just desperate to fire up the base
Then, I’m curious what motivated Democrats to *not* do this during the 2024 election?
No doubt some think-tank has already figured this out, and explains why Trump always claims elections are being rigged.
The problem is there are two types of voters, those that vote and those who vote for president.
What each type of voter does is important.
Stupid people are easy to get whipped up into a frenzy.
People who are conservative are probably motivated by fear on account of not wanting to do anything different and conserve the status quo, so this rings true.
Who makes the labels. This dichotomy is misrepesenting a bell curve with an bit.
Yes because the liberals are the end all be all. How about Hillary Clintons claim for 4 years during the first administration that Russia tampered with the election? And the current undercurrent of Russia tampering with the next election? And perhaps the one after that and so on of course unless the Democrats win and then it’ll be pure democracy at play and not the Israeli Zionist secret state contributing to both parties to achieve what they want in the middle east? Joe Biden abandoned Afghanistan, while Obama shored it up and Iraq. Bush did an illegal invasion if a sovereign nation, Iraq, just to avenge his daddy and killed over a million iraqi civilians. Both parties are the same and they work to achieve the same goals. Is this a joke comment r/science because I keep seeing that BS reminder at the bottom of my comment. Is this a „hahahaha“ comment troll post? Or just the truth that the mods are being paid to bury? Let me guess a permanent ban right?
This isn’t accurate at all.
To be fair, I suspect fear motivates both sides.
I hear multiple times every day that if I don’t get out and vote Democrat every election the conservatives will get into power. When they do they will enslave everyone who isn’t white, take all rights away from women and assign them to party loyalists as breeding stock and turn the country into a militaristic hellhole.
Meanwhile Republicans get out the vote through claims the Democrats are attempting to stuff the ballot box, so we need to get as many people to the polls as possible. Only through overwhelming effort can we drown out the fraudulent ballots, since every time we call for an investigation it is denied because we don’t have the evidence, the perpetrator, the motive, and everything else already done so the DA can bring charges if they feel like it.
Fear motivates both, one side uses it constantly while the other is more sparing, that’s all.
so does that mean liberals always have higher turn out than conservatives? so elections have a liberal bias and untrust makes the bias less?
This is such a funny thing to think about. „The election is rigged, so you have to participate in the rigged system!“ The mental gymnastics involved should qualify for a world record in smooth braindeadness.
