      Agree with this. Many people are simply buying fans, as it’s the thing to do now.

      There are practical steps you can do to cool your house and your body.

      Many of the electricity companies upped their charges at the start of July. Be wise…

      Now is not the best time to plant them.

      People need to think of water conservation. I have 3 water butts. Power cuts mean I can fill cisterns, droughts mean I can still water the plants.

      Shade will reduce ambient temperatures by several degrees, they look nicer than a void.

      This country’s objection to trees and just overall conservation of the natural world is something else.

      A lot of the newer estates in Dublin seem to have no or very few trees. I don’t understand but then I think most planning is useless anyway.

      Trees help with shade and also flooding. It’s a win win. If everyone could plant as many trees as they could that would be awesome.

      We really do, but there’s a strange group of people in this country who actively seem to hate trees. My auntie likes to follow these „then and now“ Facebook groups of towns in Ireland and I am amazed at the amount of people who comment who hate any sort of greenery, like vehemently despise it and call for people to take axes to them.

      Ireland needs more native trees and bushes, both in public spaces and private gardens. Not alone do they benefit poliinators, insects birds etc, they are much less likely to succumb to storms than most conifers.

      Just make sure they’re not just male trees otherwise the pollent count will go up sky high like in america

      They need to water the ones they just planted in Cork. Young trees and shallow rooted species are starting to really struggle.

      The ditches , old walls and non developed scrub land are absolutely flourishing . Must be a feedback loop. I came upon 2 falcons within 20 minutes of each other recently. Coillte managed foresteries are generally akin to waste ground and that is awful. There should be much more trees planted in the city but its not all doom and gloom. Some of the suburbs around the country are a sight to behold when looking from higher vantage points.

      I hate to break this to you…but trees take a long time to grow… probably should have started 20 years ago at least.

      Now that I think about it… you really do need more trees, thats why the vibe is so grey in the towns. Didn’t clock it when I visited but its so obvious actually.

      This is yet another effect of having unaccountable and undemocratic local governments. Replace our uniquely undemocratic Council CEO system of local government and replace it with a system where each council can choose 1 of 3 democratic forms of local government – cabinet system, committee system, or presidential/mayoral system like in other countries.

      This would increase scrutiny and accountability of those in charge locally, and ensure that they implement the democratic will of communities to improve nature, instead of unelected Council CEOs and Directors of Services (who make up locals government) listening to a few vocal voices or business interests.

      Tree lined streets boost property prices, they absorb exhaust fumes, they’re pretty. Ireland’s depressing rural towns (you know the ones: you drive through them and you feel sorry for the people who live there) would be transformed with a few judiciously placed trees. It’s such a simple fix, I don’t understand why we won’t do it. Tourists are starting to comment on the barrenness and the absence of nature. Maybe that’ll move the needle, since they don’t seem to care what we think.
