      It only makes sense if they also apply it to vapes. As a former smoker myself – I know people should be allowed to decide what they do to their own bodies – however, the health benefits for the entire population and the rewards we would reap in terms of a slight decreased need for urgent hospital services to do with cancers with no smokers in line in about 20 years would be amazing. Whether we like to admit it or not – smokers cost us money.

      Honestly I don’t think cigarettes are as big a problem anymore. Vapes are a much more serious issue. Their popularity is growing and they’re clearly marketed directly at kids. Ban single use vapes: there is no reason for them to exist at all.

      This is good, but when are disposable vapes being banned? We are listening about it for years and nothing has come of it yet.

      Can’t say I’m a fan of prohibition. If someone wants to do something that’s bad for their health that should be their own choice. If the state is going to ban things that are unhealthy then they should also make pints, fast food etc illegal

      I just wish they would ban smoking in public places and allow it only in specific smoking zones. Soo many people smoking in the city center and in events and just blow smoke in others face 😔. Also as others mentioned this is going to do nothing if they don’t include vapes

      No young people are buying fags at €19 a pack on a regular basis. Walk down Moore St and you’ll get offered cigarettes for much cheaper. 

      Honestly at this stage they keep clamping down on alcohol, fags and even fizzy drinks, and they wonder why people are lonely and aren’t socialising.

      It is not the states mandate to optimise people.

      Everyone knows smoking is very bad for one’s health , shortens one’s lifetime, and it is right and important to continue to make people aware of that. It is up to the individual to make their choice and live with it.

      And I am saying this as someone who never smoked a cigarette in his life.

      Isn’t the current status quo working? Just keep em as they are, controlled sale and high tax. Focus attention on vapes/other products

      I am more disturbed by all the vomit on the roads on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

      End the epidemic of alcohol-related harm, then. They won’t even put the cancer label warning on those substances. They pushed it forward to 2028.

      The rationale for allowing alcohol but banning everything else is how a monopoly is created. The alcohol lobby is doing well for itself. It also serves some of the worst „beer“ (i.e, chemically stuffed with congeners, histamine, and sulfites plus CO2 for a nice ripping headache) on tap, and yet they charge obscene prices for it.

      Make it make sense without the monopoly element. You can’t.

      They consider a lot of things. Still can’t believe despite the overwhelming majority wanting coursing and fox hunting banned they stuck a big 2 fingers up to the public.

      So Costa Rica dont ban cigarettes, they just ban smoking anywhere that would be „outdoor dining“ obviously certain pubs n places you can, they have a much more healthy outlook on life and really know the risks of smoking. People would really look down on you for it which is the proper way to do it. Prohibiting it just creates black markets, some kids will want to do it more since its „illegal“

      Meanwhile I just went them to legalize and regulate cannabis. Why does this government only seem concerned with exerting power over people instead of fixing things or helping with animal welfare?

      I wish the government would just let me as an adult choose what I want to do.

      This same sub is madly for cannabis legalisation (same as myself) but happy for another thing to be banned because of the same busy bodies.

      Before anyone cries about the health service as I’ve pointed out separately smokers die younger and pay more tax through the smokes they buy so usually don’t put much extra financial strain on the health service if any, and aside from that just because we have a health service doesn’t mean I should need permission from daddy government to eat specific foods or to smoke, the health service is meant to help us we are not meant to change our lives to help it.

      Hey look we can build houses out of cigarette boxes. We can ban stuff and it makes us look like we’re doing stuff, hurray, Ah shur begorrah they fall for it every time..

      This shouldn’t have come before they completely ban gambling advertising.

      If I could snap by fingers and banish any industry from existence it’s bookmakers. Can’t see a net Benedikt to it whatsoever.

      I’ve quit the smokes but I bet the majority would be crying out and protesting if it were alcohol….

      Costs Ireland about 11-14 billion overall (health,crime) a year while the tax on Alcohol only brings in 1.2 billion.

      Smoking costs like half a billion a year to the health services.

      So if you support banning cigarettes, you also have to support a ban on alcohol…otherwise you’re just a filthy hypocrite.

      Right, even as an unrepentant smoker they either need to ban it for everyone or leave it legal

      More nanny state. Ireland can never deal with things, always ban, ban, ban or price out of existence.

      better hurry and get it done before CETA comes in. tobacco companies have a long track record of using investor courts a lot to delay and frustrate regulations.

      Heck yes! Please do! 25 years I paid them to kill me… I was smoking since I was 15. Finally kicked them cold turkey in 2022. Ban all the nicotine products. Today!
