      In 2005, there was a major incident on a national television live broadcast where a punk band had their fans on stage behind them while they were singing the song. 2 of these people proceeded to lower their pants and underwear and jump in front of the singers with their ding dongs hanging out. From there, punk and adjacent music was essentially prohibited from Korean media, and therefore barely any new fans of these genres were forming. This led to the decline in popularity of these genres, and that has led to festivals and concerts of this genre declining.

      Although there are still Pentaport Incheon Rock Festival and Busan Rock Festival, if you look at recent lineups, they rarely have any artists of a heavier genre such as punk, metal, or hardcore. But older bands from the 80s/90s do sometimes come to Korea.

      My Chemical Romance is coming end of this year. Sum41 just came not too long ago. Foo Fighters have come a few times.

      A lot of cool Japanese rock bands have been touring korea recently. I think there are a lot of rock fans here still

      There just isn’t much of a market for it. I saw Warbringer back in April and there were only about 40 people there. There are a decent number of smaller clubs like club victim and baby Doll which have plenty of shows for Korean metal and punk bands. But it’s simply not economically viable for a lot of other bands to tour here unless they have a decent following to begin with. My Chemical Romance is coming and they have big enough of a following to make it viable but for a lot of other bands it’s simply not worth it.

      They used to come through Seoul but it’s been a long time. From 2006-2011 I saw James Brown, Clapton, Elvis Costello, Santana and The Eagles

      Also during that time period IIRC, Elton John, Billy Joel and Lady Gaga came. I remember the Lady Gaga show as at that show kids under 15 were not allowed to go. The religious nuts were like she’s a bad influence on kids and managed to get that restriction put in

      I used to work for company that sponsored global artists and bands. It’s simple. They don’t make enough money here to justify the production costs.

      Damn. I just missed that. I was in Seoul from 2007-2011 and I saw Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, Iron Maiden, the Eagles, Korn, Fatboy Slim and MGMT during my time there so def saw some cool shows.

      As some commentors have pointed out, Korea as a country doesn’t really have that big of a market for heavier rock genres. Some bands can be an exception though, but in general the market is too small (so even if a band does end up coming, they are highly reluctant to return….)

      The best chance is if they are are playing the festival in Japan, but they aren’t booking them either.

      Nine Inch Nails at Pentaport in 2018 was a big one for me. This year we have Pixies and Massive Attack which are pretty huge, though fml I have dental surgery booked that weekend…

      I guess it seems like a lot of the big American bands tend to book packed Asia tours where they hit up a bunch of summer festivals, and a lot of them skip Korea for Japan more often than not. Just compare the Pentaport and Fuji rock lineups.

      That said, if you get into the Asian scenes, a lot of really great bands do shows in Seoul more regularly. Hoping to catch Mass of the Fermenting Dregs next time they stop by.

      I saw Oasis at Goyang last year – but it did seem like a bit of a patch job compared to their other gigs, only one night with no opening act.

      Late 00’s and early 10’s was great for rock fans here. I came here during summers and saw Muse, OASIS (right before the break up), Greenday, Metallica, and a lot of big name bands. Either as part of tour, or in a rock festival, or a Korea concert.

      Sure there are still occasional big names here, but not as much as used to.

      I can think of two reasons?

      1. The rock band concert market and audience were bigger then. Summer Rock festivals were much bigger back then with major budget put in with competition between Pentaport and Jisan to bring big names back then. The local bands had big rookies pop up as well, Jang Giha, Gukkasten, Hyuk Oh, and other bands are all from that era.
      After that, Jisan just died? in mid 10’s. And big summer music events headliners were taken over by DJs and EDM artists. Rock and band music lost a lot of steam to EDM, hiphop, and casual Kpop domestically.

      2. Venues…
      Korea always had problem with high quality, huge stadiums. It lacks music oriented venues and always had to use sports stadiums for the big events. There hasn’t been any new huge stadium or music venues for mega concerts in the last twenty years. Huge big name musician? probably Seoul Stadium…as it were 20 years ago as well.
      There are other newer bigger venues that can accommodate huge crowds in other East Asian cities…so kinda losing out to other cities when big bands do a Asia tour.

      I was there and it was freaking amazing. First and only time I saw either of them in concert.
