    1. **Scientists develop a groundbreaking vaccine that outsmarts illicit fentanyl analogs**

A new study published in the [*Journal of Medicinal Chemistry*](https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jmedchem.6c00991) suggests that a novel vaccine candidate can protect against fentanyl and its many illicit variants by training the immune system to recognize a broad molecular signature rather than a single specific structure. These findings provide evidence that next-generation drug vaccines could outpace the rapid development of synthetic designer opioids.

“I put this work out there patent free to let anyone who has an interest in trying to curb addiction to have at it,” Janda noted. “I decided long ago I am not going to try and profit on other people’s miseries and misfortunes.”

This is wild because say you’re an addict, you get the vaccine, you recover, and then you get in a car accident and you’re given fentanyl at the hospital… and it doesn’t work ever again, right?

I guess it’s like being in Naloxone, but no precipitated withdrawals upon exposure and it works for a very long time or forever presumably?

Crazy they can give you an injection that immunizes you to drugs of abuse… idk if I like that at all

I hope that anyone who uses these vaccines in the future will still have options for pain control if they develop any painful conditions or are injured.
