I would train all UA soldiers in drone shooting marksmanship for 8 weeks before sending them to the field.

In this particular situation the drone operator was constrained in speed and maneuverability bc of the relatively dense foliage. So he had to slow down and this gave the defender an opportunity to engage with a slow moving target. Engaging and hitting out in the open is much more difficult.
