There’s a lot contributing to this issue. Job seeking is pretty screwed since AI came out. Applicants are generating resumes and cover letters with it. Hiring managers are summarizing and or asking it to only show the top ten resumes. It’s AI work all the way down basically.
Then you have companies posting fake listings they have no intention of hiring for so they can be eligible for government programs and tax breaks.
People are sending out literally hundreds of resumes and getting nothing back. Were in the middle of a jobs crisis and governments are sleeping on it so hard.

1. Ai has made the job searching process hell
2. Immigration has destroyed the need to pay Canadians a good wage and devalued canadian workers. Why would they hire locally when they can just hire a temporary worker for peanuts.
3. The economy sucks
4. There hasn’t been investments in companies in Canada for the last 10 years. Investments just keep going into the housing market cause it’s profitable.
5. Companies want to replace workers with ai.

I’ve hired a lot of people, usually 140+ candidates from summer students to senior technical level. I read every resume every time so long as they’ve met the minimum requirements. I speed read the first go through. I dropped relying on HR as you miss out on good candidates that way, same thing with AI. Maybe others are getting way more applicants than I am but if you want good people you’ve got to put the time in.

I was reading a piece out of the US on this topic. Apparently, despite all the blame put on immigrants, the main culprits there are automation, and seniors.
Automation is fairly obvious. Seniors takes a little explaining. There are a lot of people who either can’t retire, or are retired and work a part time job to bring in extra money/ pass the time. Companies often prefer them because they’re experienced, more reliable, and have wider availability.

Love seeing people bend over backwards to pretend it’s not the hundreds of thousands of Indian nationals working every single job that kids would normally take as a summer job.
