I mean, even I earn a bit more than that and I think of myself as a low paid second income earner. Wages need to rise fast.

Things are getting quite bad in Japan. That number seems barely livable with how much must go to rent, utilities, and taxes, let alone food.

I am a huge Japan hater, making 7m here, but there is no way this is true. 2.5 million per year. A job that is 200k a month with no bonus and no overtime etc. is 2.4m. So as much I would like to point and laugh, I simply do not believe this.

Similar to England, if you don’t live in one of the major cities it’s basically poverty and struggle.
without retiree its about 30% of household living on about less than 50man which is not great but not crazy. seems about correct. most people are working normal service jobs/office jobs and they dont pay great. Maybe 20-30man. if both husband and wife works then 50-60 is the average house hold income as shown by many surveys/papers.
This is 1) net income so misleading and 2) almost the exact same as the situation in the USA. You can’t just convert their income to USD and then compare it…the income to cost of living average is around 60% for both USA and this article. NOW considering this is NET income….Japan is actually in a better position than USA in this regard.

And if you look at the bottom of page 8, you can see that after subtracting taxes and adding national transfers, the bottom 10% rises from effectively 0 to 250 man per year. This does not include functional transfers via the national health insurance system.
