Chancellor Friedrich Merz says Germany has reached a deal with the US to buy Tomahawk cruise missiles and station them on German territory.
Merz told lawmakers in the Bundestag on Thursday, July 9 that the agreement was made on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara this week.
The deployment of Tomahawks to Germany had previously been announced by former US President Joe Biden. But the deal appeared in doubt this spring, as the wars in Iran and Ukraine had depleted stocks. The war in Iran had also caused a spat between Merz and US President Donald Trump.

Makes sense. I‘m all for European systems, but sadly we don’t have any comparable systems right now…

Inbefore the negative comments. The purchase is meant as a interim solution while European alternatives are being developed.

there is no use case in which the current german inventory isnt sufficent
MARS can fire ATACMS also there are taurus cruise missiles
seems to be a waste of money for yet another new system

I don’t get European defence spending, tbh. We won’t defend ourselves from the Danes; we only have one physical security threat, which is Russia. Either we won’t use any of these weapons and they rot in a basement, or we will use them only after Ukraine falls. In either case, just giving money to Ukraine is the effective choice. At least procuring from domestic producers could stimulate the economy, this just does nothing for anything.

Entirety of CDU have kept Germany dependent on US or Russia for their own personal profits on purpose for decades. They rallied against own tech industries and foreign workers, they rallied against own tech infrastructure, they rallied against owned renewable energy, and rallied against own defence. It’s like a party of covert traitors.

The Tomahawk cruise is a technology from the 70th, that about the same decade the policies of the CDU are stuck in. On that note: no surprise at all.
