In 2006, Japan stranded in the group fase with Brazil and Australia going further. So arguably Japan got beaten by Australia, and who kicked Australia out in the round of 16 ? **Italy**, the future winners.

In 2014, Japan again went out in the group, this time Colombia and Greece went through. Colombia lost the quarter finals to Brazil and Brazil the semi finals to Germany. And who won in 2014 ? **Germany**

So, for 2006 this theory still stands, for 2014 it has an extra step but still stands.
