Prime Minister Takaichi has explicitly stated this, and many Japanese people support it.👍

Nice! Taiwan is happy to get Japan’s defense assistance. The United States is happy to see Japan help so it doesn’t have to directly confront China. Japan is happy because this is what its PM explicitly stated. China is happy because it can take revenge for what Japan did to it during WW2. A win for all parties!

I am sure someone knows this, but can Japan use its self-defense force per its Constitution to defend a foreign nation (well, a runaway region of another country or something). I imagine it absolutely cannot without an amendment. Based on Ukraine and Iran, it appears that if you are in a defensive posture, drones and ballistic missiles will bring a super power to its knees, so maybe it won’t be that one-sided with Taiwan/Japan/other Asian countries. War is horrific and stupid, however.

Has Taiwan ever heard of a monkey paw. I feel that if the shit hits the fan that Japan could go from apathetic to patriotic which would mean doing what you have to. Japanese do what they are „supposed to do.“ There is not a lot of why are we doing this. If war broke out and Japan was thrown into it I think Japan would help fight, but after that I don’t think Japan would go back to its current state. It would be a political mess.

Military analysts seem to agree that any invasion of Taiwan by China would require China to use Japanese islands. Some uninhabited, and others inhabited. I can’t imagine that Japan would not then be helping defend Taiwan, even if not directly, just to protect its own territory. And if the US honors its treaty, it would be required to assist Japan as well.

Surely sly fox not gg to be hearing this? Then ccp will start war game surrounding Taiwan soon!

War planning is already there. China has already telegraphed what they will do. They will attack bases stationed in Okinawa to prevent a response from JPN and the US. Another scenario is a slow start embargo which now is improbable as it increases the likelihood of increased duration of conflict, preparedness of amphibious assault, and world response. PM’s response was exactly because of these threats.

As a Taiwanese, I don’t „believe“ in it, but I think Japan will be involved in some way, like bases used and logistics and politics.
Good luck Taiwan… when their people keep look down on other nations less developed than them

I don’t understand why “a taiwan contingency is a japan contingency”. China ADA2 bubble from the mainland is already covers japan and poses major threat to cut off japans sea lanes. Controlling taiwan only extends that bubble a bit. It’s risking a lot of lives for very uncertain outcome.
Considered intervening, this will have high military costs, including lives lost. US victory dramatically improves the japans security situation, but losing makes it severely worse, with a highly hostile and dominant regional and probably global power. This is ignoring situations where there’s a stalemate like iran and every things blockaded.
Meanwhile staying neutral costs nothing directly bar economic fallout that happens regardless. US victory improves japans security situation although relations with US are badly damaged, but there’s also a lot less need for good relations. Chinese victory the security situation is bit worse but china might even view japan more positively for not helping the US.

Just say any invasion of Taiwan will be met with the destruction of Three Gorges Dam. Iran has successfully prevented the US from attacking its critical infrastructure by threatening mass civilian death by hitting GCC desalination. Apparently this kind of threat works.

Taiwan is a major trading partner. Since the US has the biggest small mind president right now, they can’t be trusted, since he only goes to war when Netanyahu tells him too.

Lol. Japan wouldn’t defend Japan against China. They’d do that thing where they tilt their head sideways and suck their teeth a few times.

No idea why anyone thinks anything real is going to happen. This is all just cold war esque blah blah blah where nothing will happen. The Chinese like making money too much to bother with this.
