The EU has approved a weight-loss food additive. Developed in England and Scotland, its developers say just 10gm a day can regulate appetite and prevent weight gain.

    1. sure, let’s put it kn everything. we’ll find out in 10-20 years the long term effect of inulinmaxxing.

      edit:
maybe we can make it mandatory to be added in specific foods that lack fiber like ultra processed

    2. Inulin is very old news.

It’s has benefits, but also severe drawbacks for those whose GI doesn’t tolerate it well. People with SIBO can’t even look at it.

    3. Called it.

We added florid to water to fix tooth decay, we added iodine to salt, we added vitamin D to milk.

Humans develop solutions for a mass audience if the issue is population wide. – adding weight loss drugs to food to fix a overweight population, of course we will.

    4. god forbid we would simply exercise and control calories

if someone isn’t able to do it that way then they should be prescribed something from a medical professional

Inulin is known to cause a lot gas in some people. Lotsa farts. Toot toots all the live long day.

I think obesity will stay as a hallmark of lower social class. Poor people will not have the money, means or time to eat healthy, cook for themselves instead of eating processed crap, and will likely not be able to pay 100-500€ per month on weight loss and longevity drugs and/or products. Wealthy people and the few remaining upper middle class people will profit immensely, though.

    7. we’ve known about inulin for a long time, it’s just a decent soluble fiber
You can add any soluble fiber (inulin, psyllium fibes, beta-glucan, wheat dextrin(but not wheat bran, which is insoluble fiber), etc) to your diet and get pretty much the same effect with minor variations

Afaik (based on my own experiences & also publicly avalible info)
Beta-glucan is very potent(causing noticeable effects even at a daily dost of ~3g!), but has a chance to cause gastrointestial symptoms like bloating, discomfort, gas, etc.(similar to inulin). For me it was especially bad in the first bit. People say high doses can be pretty brutal.

Psyllium Husk an indigestible soluble fiber that is tolerated very well & is very good at the bulking effect that reduces appetite, but it doesn’t do anything for your gut microbiome(since they can’t, yknow. actually eat it). For me this is the workhorse one for achieving satiation, you’re able to add this to your diet in pretty large amounts.

And Inulin has some of the properties of both and is quite effective at causing intestinal distress. It also acts on the liver in ways that we don’t fully understand and may be problematic(though human tests can’t seem to replicate the -really- problematic effects, they’re mostly seen in mice).
I use it sometimes, but in my opinion, a bit of beta glucan is probably better(if you can tolerate it)

I’ve never actually tried wheat dextrin so I won’t comment on it. It’s not a gelling fiber, though, so I suspect it doesn’t effect satiation that much(the most important part for weight loss).

    8. Why dose everyone including perfectly healthy people with weight loss medications just because some can’t control themselves? If someone has trouble with self regulation they can take this stuff as a supplement or some other weight los drug. But there are also people who struggle to eat enough.for them It would be dangerous to add this stuff to all kinds of foods as the article suggests.

    9. Insulin was discovered and the patent given away so that poor will have access, yet many still choose between food or their insulin. Laser eye surgery came out, yet plenty of folks wearing glasses. We produce far more food then the world can consume yet it rots.. Somehow problems persist beyond the discovery of the remedy.
