While some gesture from Lime would be welcome, shouldn’t it be first of all up to the child’s family to compensate her? Unless there’s been a malfunction of the bike or a law infringed by Lime here?

    2. I mean. I hate those companies, but shouldn’t the parents be responsible for any damage their child causes?

    3. Well, since there wasn’t malfunction on the bike, I dont know why would Lime be held responsible. Can you imagine car companies paying compensations for car accidents?

    4. Why would a company pay her? It’s a bicycle, it’s not the bicycle manufacturers fault

If I want to ride a Byrd scooter in my city we need to take a picture of our drivers license, and answer 3 questions regarding safety. I wonder if Lime could implement something like this.

    6. Babylon4All on

Yeah, unless the scooter wasn’t working, this is the operators fault, same as if someone hits you with a car.

The real unfairness here is to believe that the actual culprit and the adult responsible for the child should not be held accountable. They also fled the scene instead of helping the person they injured.

People should read the article. The kid stole the bike. No one knows who he is.

    9. It sickens me to see innocent people have their lives ruined by accidents that are absolutely no fault of their own, and while Lime appears to have no liability, as many have said, there is clearly no justice for this lady.

A friend of mine was hit by a car in London and suffered severe spinal injuries. The driver’s insurance paid out for his 12+ hour surgery where they had to harvest bone material from his ribs to be able to rebuild his vertebrae.

You cannot drive a car or motorcyle without insurance, so perhaps it’s time for the UK to introduce compulsory insurance for all powered wheeled vehicles on public carriageways.

I live in Hungary and, in the case of e-scooters, compulsory insurance was introduced a couple of years ago. It only costs about 30 quid a year.

Let’s ban all of these scooter companies then! So many people are getting injured and we are all left paying for it.

    11. Lime, forest etc need to make their bikes unridable without a booking which comes with insurance. If their model doesn’t allow for docking then they need to pay out when their bikes are misused

    12. Are the company liable in any way, I can’t see anything that states this. Surely it’s the child’s family that should compensate?

I’ve been hurt under water, riding motorcycles, driving cars, riding bicycles, and those Lime scoots too and other similar motherfuckers. Usually it’s an insurance deal.

But Lime, no accountability when an accident happens with someone was operating your vehicle? Yeah, they must go.

This is just gonna lead to vigilantes taking kids out on those bikes 🤷‍♂️🚮

Why does the company get to make that decision? Shouldn’t a judge be making it for them?

    16. This is like saying – woman who was left with two spinal fractures after being hit with an Audi car by a a some person in London says company’s decision not to compensate her ‘so unfair’…

Tragic for sure. But the vehicle is not at fault for being driven irresponsibly.

If it was a hired car and the pedestrian was struck because of negligent driving the car hire company insurance would pay out. Because cyclists are generally uninsured then there’s little recourse for a victim of something like this.

Maybe if you’re hiring these bikes there should be a liability waiver that Lime pays out and then they have to chase the hiring cyclist to get compensated.

So, let me get this straight: one can rent a scooter, take a really fast throttle, run over somebody and f…k him or her up really good – and just walk away?

Mafia will love this. Terrorists too.

    19. I don’t understand something. Lime e-bikes are not insured ehen you rent them?

      How can this be possible?

    20. Unique_Tap_8730 on

Why is it even up to their beneficence wether she gets compensation? If they cant afford the necessary insurance to cover their riders beings neglicent stupid shits society should not be obliged to allow them to operate at all.

    21. There should be a petition pushed along with this, to have more regulation on these bikes. They are parked all over the place, often blocking exits and paths. And there’s no accountability taken when minors are permitted to use them. It’s a disgrace.

I’ve searched and there’s no current petition on this

    22. Mediocre_Daikon6935 on

Why would Lime be responsible for the negligent operation of a rental vehicle?

    23. inebriatedWeasel on

I’m really surprised they don’t have insurance for this sort of thing.

    24. She would need to report to the police as a hit and run, who would then DSAR the lime scooter data for the account holder who would be sued for allowing a minor to operate the vehicle. If they captured the scooter’s serial number at the scene then even better.

    25. Like told them they can’t tell who did it?

      > they were told the ride could not be traced

They have the bike yet like can’t tell who used what card to rent it? Then if so I’d definitely blame lime
