The sentences for hit and run drivers who kill someone should be far tougher. Leaving a dying person behind is an aggravating factor, not an afterthought. And if this driver was so intoxicated that she killed a man and claims not to remember it, it’s fair to question what state she was in while supposedly caring for her children. Victims‘ families are the ones serving the real life sentence.
If you ever want to kill someone in Ireland you do it with a car, chances are you wont spend a day in prison.
Easiest way to murder someone and get away with it is to hit them with your car. The Judge will find all manner of reasons to downplay it, especially if you have a few letters of reference to read out in court 🙄
Absolutely, if you hit someone and drive off that is basically murder. You (presumably) hit someone by accident but if you deliberately leave them there after an accident that is intent.
I don’t see why they can’t implement a law under which anyone who kills someone while driving intoxicated above a certain threshold is charged with murder or at the very minimum manslaughter. You had to make the conscious choice to get in, turn on, and drive the vehicle. Worst of all was she had kids in the car and drive away after hitting the poor man
If you want to murder someone in Ireland, run them over in a car and douse yourself in whiskey before the guards arrive. Show up to court with letters from your GAA club, priest and local TD about what a great skin you are. Talk about some difficulties in your childhood. Hey presto, you’ll be unfortunate to spend more than 3 years in prison for it and a decent chance you walk totally free if you don’t do as this woman did and have an aggravating factor like driving off.
This woman thought her sentence was harsh and was due to appeal. Not sure what has come of that.

Kids in the car and she still drove off. That’s the part that should put her away, not the drink driving charge on its own.
We are not a serious country.
And what would harsher sentences actually achieve?
There must be a more proactive way we face these awful instances. Punishment after something awful happens does nothing to prevent the something awful, I don’t think it’s even much in the way of a deterrent.

So glad they felt the need to include that in the article. Implying he might have shared some of the blame for being hit by a blind drunk driver in the morning otherwise.
The social contract in this country is broken.
Driving unaccompanied on a provisional, without insurance, should have been enough to warrant a driving ban. It never ceases to amaze me how many people have been driving on provisionals for decades. ‘Oh it’s fine I’m a good driver’ I DON’T CARE FOLLOW THE FUCKING RULES LIKE THE REST OF US

What is the point of „disqualified from driving for eight years“?
Drunk driving that kills or maims should result in a permanent driving ban. After all, you wouldn’t let someone back into a factory to run a production line if they’d been so drunk they wrecked the machinery. Why on earth would you let someone back into control of tons of metal *at any time in their life* when they’ve been clearly irresponsible and incompetent, resulting in a fatality or serious injury?
It’s not as if people have to drive any more; there are ebikes that do everything a car can, but go at a sensible speed.
Victims of crime get no support in general in this country and all resources are directed at the perpetrators in order to “rehabilitate” them. Sentencing is a joke as well, judge in my case said in the exact words “while the offending is on the upper scale, I don’t want to take away the light at the end of the tunnel” and so headline sentence was 8 year, reduced to 4 after mitigating circumstances, reduced to 2.5 after appeal as it was unduly harsh for first offence, the final kick in the stomach was he was out having served 17 month baths because he was a model prisoner.
His victim, a child he sexually abused, that came to light at the age of 5 is still serving her sentence at the age of 16. It has fucked her up in so many ways and still does to this day despite the therapy she’s done. That damage has had a butterfly effect throughout our family all the while he is living his life, working and has g/f who probably knows nothing about his past due to anonymity clause.
There was no therapy offered by Tusla for her as they didn’t cater for children her age. It has been an absolute nightmare.
The only justice this woman gets is that people know what an uncaring, callous, immoral piece of shit JADE MORIARTY is and that all who know or come to know, the type of person she is.
