First, it was the massive electricity use.

Then, it was guzzling millions of gallons of water.

Now, they’re polluting the water they were supposed to be recycling.

It’s like every month there’s a new issue with these data centers.

    2. Crazy to think we’re building a ton of these things on purpose. Its almost like someone in charge thought we weren’t killing the planet fast enough.

    3. Ok-Pomegranate-7458 on

Let’s heat up the water to incubating temperature and then put it back.

Their 4 million square foot data center is under 100 acres. And causing problems for the community.
Utah is building a 40,000 acre data center. I’m guessing if it actually gets built it will cause more problems. I’m no math genius but definitely more.

      Bacteria*. It’s extremely plural.

Even if you had cleanroom laboratory conditions you’d have trouble locating a single bacterium in a Petri dish.

Chiding Retort: If you meatbags would stop drinking water this wouldn’t be an issue.

Tell me again how people opposing data centers are just irrational Luddites.

    8. The fact that politicians were/are *giving* tax and other incentives for these data centers to be built in their areas tells you everything you need to know about who they really work for.. and it ain’t us. There is nothing but downsides to people who live near these data centers.

    9. We’re fucking doomed. My god, every week it’s another story about these data centers guzzling power, draining water, polluting something, or driving up costs, all so AI can write us a slightly worse email.

We are killing ourselves for some AI, humans are more stupid as they progress

Its high time, data centers are exploiting natural resources to an extent that the resources might not be accessible to anyone again..

    12. What? But the lobbyists and town council members say that they won’t affect the environment at all!

A bacteria that’s common in areas with heavy metal contamination. Interesting.

    14. A few days ago someone said „once they fill up the water tanks they won’t need much more going forward“

No. That’s if you spend the time and money to build a proper cooling system. Why in the world would these leeches do that?

21% of all electricity generated in Ireland is used by data centres.
Ireland now has the most expensive domestic electricity costs in all of rhe EU.

They should force Zuckerberg to drink the tainted water until it’s fixed.

If they can’t output reclamation water they shouldn’t be allowed to take input either. Shut the whole thing down, or preferably just let it burn.

At least in this instance it happened somewhere it could be and was caught.

… Just think of an the other places that won’t be the case. What fun times we live in.

I hope we learn from this. This is new territory where we’re giving corporations so much power. Never before have we seen corporations come in and contaminate the water, the food, the things we need to survive. We must resist!

(Oh right, we have recent examples of this exact same scenario. Like fracking. Among a billion others.)

    20. Prestigious_Fail3791 on

They might as well call these things Pollution Centers.

I’m curious what’s the plan when we’re completely out of water 10 years from now because billionaires wanted more billions. No way to just make more water…. If you’re telling me these things are being built so we can quickly find the cures for cancer, aids, death, etc… then OK, but it’s all for selfish reasons.

    21. They’ve poisoned our water supply, burned down our crops, and delivered a plague unto our houses

    22. Electrical_Regular41 on

What is funny is most people will not even realize what reclamation water is. The fact they are polluting that is crazy. My question how long did the discharges happen before the npdes permit get pulled?

This bacteria, *Cupriavidus gilardii,* is resistant to carbapenems, a beta-lactam antibiotic that targets cell walls, and is commonly used for resistant infections.

The bacteria is also related to pseudomonas sp. and burkholderia sp., two groups of bacteria known for causing fatal pneumonia in cystic fibrosis patients. These bacteria love water, from hot tubs to saunas to sinks.

They had to shut down the water recycling system for months to clean it. Who knows how many patients may have gotten ill before their privileges were revoked, BACK IN MARCH. Only hitting the news now…

    24. dudwithacamera on

Who could have seen data centers polluting water? Just about everyone that doesnt make money off of them.

    25. I am absolutely confused how a single public figure can talk about citizens turning down their AC while this shit exists. We’ve lost utter and absolute control of the plot at this point.

This isn’t even meant to be a partisan comment. The contract is so beyond broken.

When the fees imposed are a sliver of revenue , it’s just the cost of doing business

    27. did anyone read the article to its completeion or is reddit just this bad now.

    28. I once had a call from a guy that worked at Meta.

We make industrial instrumentation for measuring pressure, temperature, and level, among other things.

Guys was asking about how to configure a device they purchased from us, to measure tank level using the specific gravity of the water times the height of the 0-100% span, giving you straight up tank level.

They were wondering why it wasn’t working, when from the factory, the device is ranged 0-1000 inches H2O, and their tank was less than that.

They just put it in and never re-ranged it for the span they had. I asked if they had the correct cables and software to rerange it and they were “Wut?”.

I asked how tall the tank was.

      “About 18-20 feet, maybe 25.”

Me: No sir, I need exactly how tall the tank is or how high the 100% mark is above the device.

“It’s really tall, like closer to 25.”

Me: This device needs exact numbers, I can’t ballpark it.

“What do we use to measure it?”

Me: *stunned silence* then “What?! A tape measure is my go to…..?”

“Oh yeah, that would do it….”

Anyway, I handed it off to someone with more patience than I, these are the guys using up all the water.

It’s almost as if (bear with me for a second) this technology should not be utilized until the tech industry can be regulated into employing environmentally safe practices.

But that would require a functioning government, which we unfortunately do not have.
