This seems a bit alarmist.
FTA:
> eating the equivalent of one hot dog a day is associated with roughly an 18% higher risk of colorectal cancer
Very few people eat cured meats daily. And, although it’s not stated in the article, I seem to remember the average lifetime risk of colon cancer is about 2%. So an 18% increase in relative risk brings the absolute risk up to 2.36%. Everyone should assess their own risks, but a 0.36% increase in risk isn’t enough for me swear off all cured meats.

Because the risk is relatively low compared to so many other things. Also, the meat processors of the world would pressure the media outlets if the incessantly ran news stories about „dangerous, deadly, fatal hot dogs.“ They’d pull ads and that’s real money, and that’s what the media listens to.

That’s because the science is shoddy and even the laypeople recognize that.
When a newspaper cites a study and they don’t describe it well but everyone knows the journalist who wrote the article is just trying to promote and justify their vegetarian lifestyle people ignore it.
Even if the journalist is not a vegetarian but they sensationalize the story people will ignore it.
When journalist make claims about causation but the study is observational that damages the claim too. When they fail to even include the hazard ratios (like the study here) or to explain how to interpret hazard ratios they do a disservice.
Lastly, when they create a laundry list of potential harms (meat, heme iron, cooking, and nitrites) they weaken the case and even demonstrate that no one even knows what the culprit is.
Instead, write a balanced objective and complete story, focus on one harm, (like nitrites), and describe the science thoroughly including the strengths and weaknesses of the design.
