Growing up, I pirated pretty much everything. It was very inconvenient but it was free and the best way to get movies, TV shows and music at the time.

When Spotify became a thing, I stopped pirating music because it was easier to pay a monthly cost than to pirate. The same goes for Netflix, although recently I went back to pirating movies and TV shows because of how terrible streaming services have become.

There will always be some portion who pirates no matter what, but overall if you offer a more convenient way to access digital content, most people would rather pay money than spend time pirating.

    2. Hilarious when people quote a person who is single handedly responsible for killing physical games on PC and treat him as some kind of a hero. Fuck those companies and their fanboys.

that quote is fifteen years old and it stays true because the industry keeps volunteering to run the control experiment

    4. It’s most certainly both.

Did I emulate so many games because they were unavailable in my country or because I was broke and couldn’t afford them? Yes.

Taking the price of some AAA titles into account, especially in countries with weaker currencies, piracy is _very much_ a pricing issue as well.

    6. If it was as easy to pirate stuff as it is to click a button on Netflix and press play, then I promise you, people would pirate everything.

    7. I remember he said the exact same thing around the early 2010’s and he’s 100% right. People want convenience and are willing to pay for it. Buying a game on Steam is more convenient than pirating, and it’s the same with Netflix and other digital services.

Spotify (and quite possibly other music services) are the only ones who get streaming right. They have almost all of the music you want.

Netflix etc. are shit. Browsing Netflix is like the experience of browsing the 99p bin in HMV in the 90s. Just stuffed with all the obvious rubbish you’ve either seen a hundred times or have no interest in seeing.

Note to Spotify: the pricing of your product isn’t perfectly elastic, so beware constantly pushing it up. Otherwise I will cancel and find other ways to get my music.

Sony and Nintendo are two companies that baffle me with their attitude towards customers and pricing.

Its like they feel they never risk anything by mistreating customers and not competing on basics.

So either users are „fans“ of these platforms and hence it will take a lot to move them away from them, or Sony may get a wake up call.

I have a feeling that the „fans“ attitude will still prevail in this case.

    10. you mean the same gabe that has a digital only fucking store this guy gets a free pass for no reason

I think it’s definitely both. I was priced out of PS5’s entire run and went back out to sea as a result. It’s a service issue only when the product is generally affordable to most.

      I don’t get it.

Steam doesn’t provide physical game copies, only digital, isn’t Sony simply going the same route?

How is Gabens quote a dunk on digital storefronts when his greatest creation is a digital storefront?

      Genuinely curious.

Yah I think piracy is still a pricing issue. But good enough service will make up for it, but it never lasts

    14. When I was young, most of my games were pirated.

In the last 20, the only game I’ve pirated was a a delisted game I was interested in playing, but not paying $300+ on a shady key, of $500 for a second hand copy that may not work.

      That’s a service issue.
