Hi, Louis here in the newsroom in Bonn. This is a story to watch, with German prosecutors saying a Ukrainian national identified only as Serhii K. acted „on the orders of state authorities in Ukraine.“
They made the announcement a day after German media reported that he was set to be charged with war crimes, causing an explosion, disrupting public services, and destroying critical infrastructure.
In their statement on Thursday, prosecutors said he was „an officer in the Ukrainian army“ and that, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, „he and other members of the military … developed a plan to destroy“ the Nord Stream pipeline.
With Germany being one of Ukraine’s biggest backers in its effort to fend off the Russian invasion, accusations that could implicate Ukrainian state authorities in the attack, which cut off Europe from gas deliveries via the pipelines, could prove diplomatically explosive.

The people who blew up the pipeline are European heroes… they should have statues… not send to prison. They have done more for Independence of Europe than anyone else.

Maybe you could also investigate Schroeder and Merkel for having built it in the first place.
Edit for all the „cheap gas“ people in the comments: Ukraine had a deterrent against Russia, and that was the fact that they could kill gas exports by blowing up the Yamal pipeline. Russia worked hard to build the Nord Stream in order to bypass Ukraine and remove that chokepoint. When Merkel pushed forward with it, she basically made sure Ukraine had no economic deterrent whatsoever, while Putin increased his leverage on Europe’s energy security. And since the Nord Stream was built after Crimea, it strongly signalled that Europe would have preferred economic benefits to a moral stand and likely contributed to Putin’s assumption that he could get away with it.
Would the war have started anyway? Possibly, but this was a colossal mistake, especially when paired with the nuclear phaseout

Based on how poorly Europe is “cutting off” Russia. This was a clear cutting off.

Give him a 50 euro fine and 200 hours of community service and let’s call it quits.

Actually scary to see how many people here view everything purely through the lens of „my team or the other team?“

Ok I get it that nordstream was/is a Problem, but that doesnt justify destroying german Infrastructure. Now how should Germany react to that information, should they abandon help for Ukraine? If they do nothing then Germanys infrastructure is open for everybody to destroy apparently.

If only would Germany use at least half of the energy spent on this to prosecute Russian terrorism instead, Jesus fucking Christ…

After „Ukraine“ sabotaged Nord Stream, USA natural gas shipments increased by 300%.

Do I care who destroy the pipe? Not really, but it’s to know. Do I like that the pipe between Germany and Russia was destroyed? OF COURSE.

Just out of curiosity, what is the ownership structure of this Nord Stream pipeline? Did they blow it up in international waters? Would there be any legal difference if they’d done it in Russian waters? (I realise that logistically it would be much more difficult.) After all, they’re constantly attacking Russian infrastructure.

I get why everybody is siding with Ukraine, but don’t you think this sets a dangerous precedent? Both as an attack on civilian infrastructure, and also by attacking allied countries supply of necessary resource? Lying about who did it for years also does little to help credibility. Prosecute Putin, I am 100% for that. But Germany was helping Ukraine with billions and Ukraine bombed their key infrastructure. They shouldn’t have forced Germany to stop buying Russian gas, they should have let them do it on their own.
If this doesn’t get any punishment would it make it okay for countries to start sinking of oil tankers , or something similar to German bombing in US harbour in 1916?

This was obvious. The initial reporting tried to pin it on the Russians. That made zero sense. Why would they cut off such an important source of hard currency? It’s not like Germany was using it to fuel a war economy

The pipelines should have never been built, everyone warned what the consequences would be if Russia could transport gas directly to Germany bypassing Ukraine. German politicians ignored the geopolitical risks and just saw how they can get cheap gas and make millions.

Don’t care. European elites were in bed with Russia. Europe shouldn’t have allowed Russia to take Crimea in 2014. Seems like some in the EU expect Russia to have carte blanche while throwing Ukraine under the bus. Good on Ukraine for opposing Putin and fighting for their freedom and territory. Fucking heroes (and probably saved EU from Russian imperialism) if you ask me.

Are we gonna invoke article 5 on Ukraine? (1 attack on a nato country is an attack on all nato countries)

So we are paying billions to Ukraine while they destroy our economy and infrastructure?
Seems fair.
