    1. Wow, if only politicians had promised massive house building policies before!

If he can pull this off I would vote for him & Labour at the next election no questions asked (currently an SNP voter).

Didn’t the bloke he’s just booted out on his arse promise the same 2 years ago 🤔

Are they going to cancel the right to buy? Otherwise it’s just sticking the middle finger up to those of us that have managed to get on the property ladder by buying a derelict property doing at our own expense

Plenty of brownfield land in and around our towns and cities, especially in post-industrial areas that didn’t get any attention when the industry all moved away, to build on

This is the right attitude. We’ve been [net losing social housing](https://england.shelter.org.uk/support_us/campaigns/social_housing/loss_of_social_housing) for decades.

Mass council housebuilding means more affordable homes for more people, whilst also reducing pressure on the private rented sector, which isn’t equipped to tackle homelessness.

Housing should not be primarily run for profit, but run according to need. Any profits should be reinvested into building more affordable housing.

Abolish right to buy while you’re at it.

It’s social housing for the benefit of society.

Please for the love of god Andy. Consult an architect that doesn’t work for a developer. This is a huge opportunity to invest in quality design, innovation and architecture nobody wants new build hell.

    9. Old_Housing3989 on

I’m very supportive of this policy and focus on COUNCIL houses and not “affordable” homes.

But – there is not the slack capacity in the economy to do this quickly. There aren’t the plasterers, brick layers, architects and even concrete and window frames to do it. Ramping that will take from months to decades and business won’t invest unless they see a sustained investment environment.

We can import bricks yeah, but folks don’t seem so happy with importing bricklayers.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a single additional (ie not already planned) council house is delivered before the next election.

No government has kept that promise and based on what Labour said, do you think British people will get these houses…see past interviews, the answer is NO.

Sadly a politicians promise is not an actual promise. If you want to know what they are liable to do, look at their parliamentary visits and voting records etc. That is often far more telling.

    12. Blah blah blah! If they are not going to give Kier the time to do what’s needed then they won’t give you the time that’s needed.

    13. Open-Butterfly-5288 on

I think the good news is whatever government we get now, that’s going to be a standard promise.

And next to nothing will get built, and what will get built will be for-profit to suit the private sector.

Council houses are good but there needs to be plenty of flats in the mix too. Single people and couples without children/children who no longer live at home need affordable housing too and where I am it seems that the properties they would have occupied were the first to go under the bulldozers when „Regeneration“ schemes started, which has only lead to a boom in dodgy HMO landlords cashing in.

    16. guillotine_vendor on

building one single council house would probably fulfil that description.

    17. Severe_Ad_146 on

just build fucking useful flats. Not pokey small flats, actually large flats, give people 100 m2 + of room, with storage, a large kitchen, space to dine, a separate lounge and crucially, with access to green space and amenities e.g bike sheds, secure lockers, secure drying areas, green space to use that isn’t next to the dual carriage way.

Also, town centres are dying. Shops are yes, but nightlife isn’t – so just build cheaper accommodation in the town for young people.

    18. StarmersReckoning on

I’ll believe it when they’re built. I’ve seen them all before.

    19. He’s not even in power yet

The press realy are setting him up to fall in the first few days

    20. nightdwaawf on

Can we build more reservoirs to feed all these houses. So we don’t have a hose ban in March

    21. Why do governments even bother with house building targets? Just to make it seem like they are doing something about it?

    22. Valuable-Ad2028 on

I am not a fan of council housing. That said, i watched and waited for 2 years while Starmer did nothing and said nothing meaningful about how he would actually fulfil his pledge. So i have to give credit to Burnham who appears to actually be getting on with doing something…

    23. Probably will have to go the prefab route to achieve this. https://auar.io/ – this can churn out 1500 units per year on one robot arm, I should know, I monitored the development project.

    24. Awkward_Un1corn on

How about he does something to fill the ones that are built but empty?

Invest in maintaining them, get rid of the stupid biding process and just put people on houses. We have 30,000 that are currently vacant and a long list. Rank the families in each area and allocate the first appropriate house for them.

    25. Vectorman1989 on

They need to end or restrict the right-to-buy scheme. Right-to-buy was abolished in 2016 in Scotland and the rest of the country should follow suit.
