I mean a lot of those stores sure have quite small selection in-store compared to online. Sometimes not even worth going to check for model or how it looks in-person.

    2. Pricing in their stores in garbage. They sell 99% of their products at retail when the items have been around for years and are discounted elsewhere online. Games and movie sections speak for themselves.

They are nice if you actually want to check or try actual products on to see if they really fits you but the problem is that I buy most of the products online later on

I’m always confused how these massive shops in the countryside are still in business when I only see 5 cars at most in the parking lot

    5. There’s no reason to shop retail for large appliances. Never has been. You can’t test-drive a fridge.

You know what I want? A god damned RadioShack. I need cable adapters and capacitors and button batteries, LOCALLY, so I can fix my issues same-day instead of waiting for a delivery. But apparently I’m the only one out here living life like this so

    6. And yet they’re building out *even more* Bic Camera space in Ikebukuro. They got rid of the neat Gacha corner near the Seibu line gates :[

If you’re buying several items at once the big box stores offer good discounts and proper delivery and installation if needed. At certain times you can also earn decent points too.
I’ve also bought a crapload of stuff online over the years but sometimes it’s nice to go in and actually see what you’re buying beforehand.

    8. These stores don’t have a compelling value proposition for why people should spend time there.

The key to being more successful for these places is to have people spend more time there – If people feel they should spend time there, they will spend money there. Otherwise they just become a showroom for Amazon and other online retailers.

On a personal level, I go to these places when I need something right away. My PC died recently and I just went to Nojima, saw their selection (and that it wasn’t crazy compared to online) and just bought one. When my wife and I moved we bought two air conditioners from Sakai and the installation was terrible – this was in contrast to the guys Yodobashi Camera sent for our original air conditioner.

They had a pair of headphones I wanted priced at 35,000 yen.
I found the exact same ones on Amazon for 25,000 yen…
I understand retail need to sell higher than online, but 1.4x the price is outlandish.

We had to use a crane to lift a fridge to the 2nd floor veranda because the fridge was too big to lift up the stairs. Big box electronics store was very helpful in getting things organized.
