So they don’t even bother pretending we live in a democracy anymore?

Oh, here we go again. And if it doesnt pass, were gonna do it again in a few months.

      Repeat until it passes.

The EU is a cruel, unfunny joke

    3. I do Not only have privacy concerns but IT Security concerns , a backdoor in encryption or pre-installed Software on Users Devices are a huge vulnerability that malicious actors will find and use.

The EPP group and everyone in it who is not opposing this (including the new Hungarian government’s Tisza party), has been giving me either no response or the „iss fo protecting them kids“ mantra.. People have been pushing on them regarding the matter but no peep given yet again.

    5. This is a massive Trojan horse.

The answer to the very real issue of kids social media use is NOT mass surveillance of ALL messaging apps and giving away everyone’s rights to privacy in the internet. They want to force every single person to give up their IDs to the social media platforms whose very business model is stealing our personal information.

The real solution is regulating social media companies, they have the full capacity to monitor and prevent these issues without getting EVERY SINGLE ADULT’S IDs. They already can automatically detect bullying, abuse, harassment etc. These big tech companies want both your personal info and to abdicate the responsibility of monitoring their own platforms. Double win, that’s why they’re pushing SO HARD for this.

Another real solution is that kids shouldn’t get their own iPads or smartphones until they’re 14/16, which aligns much better with new psychological research that tracks not just the deleterious effects of social media, but screen time in general. It should be the PARENTS responsibility to implement this, the same way you don’t give children candy all day long, without this being technically illegal. This approach would solve the issue in the overwhelming majority of cases, without infringing on everyone’s right to privacy.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

These measures where already massively rejected by citizens and the European Parliament last March, and now these big tech companies are trying to get them passed AGAIN Monday June 29th.

If you’re in Europe Email and call your politicians ASAP.

EU is not democracy it seems if it’s going ahead with this it goes against one of democracy values of rights to privacy and going authoritarian like China and Russia which they have criticised for being authoritarian in the past

The politicians who push for this should be ones to test all this shit out see how they like it they soon change their tone when it infringes on their rights

And they wonder why i wish for an asteroid to put us out of our misery.

    8. I have a proposal as well, much more popular I reckon. Let’s bring it all the way to the EuroParliament: Anyone who tries to use „to protect the children“ in any proposal as justification, is to be immediately suspended from their position and investigated for both corruption and child pornography.

I’ve got a few more, vote for me and I will absolutely SPAM them.

    9. So how will it work? In practice, and I dont mean the It and privacy.

Like, i call someone a retard, or threaten their life. Or say they look gay, or that their shirt is ugly af. Who will say what is allowed, where the line is drawn.

What will actually be monitored? Like the antiterrorist initiatives, bullying, cyber criminal, what is the clear scope or regulation? Is there a tldr somewhere?

    10. and thats why secure chat apps outside of European control are so important.
please join r/chatter_chatApp and lets build the future of encrypted conversation all open-source and self-hostable

This won’t protect children. This won’t stop terrorism. This is an open treason and anyone voting for it should be treated as traitors.

    12. First the US, then Ukraine, and now the EU

Seems like everyone is really eager to prove how quickly they can burn through all the goodwill they’ve been building up for so long

    13. So much politicans wanting to pass this, they must watch an awful lot of child pornography.

    14. So if this passes, then what? Are you gonna just ditch internet just like that?

    15. Who is voting this if people already said no?

If this pass, what Europeans can do? Not single country, Europeans as a whole..

This is extremely disheartening, to the point I’m starting to loose trust in the (current) EU. Bringing this up again, in summer, during the most extreme heatwave the continent has ever seen, while there’s a World Cup going on, after the same proposition has been rejected multiple times, is nothing short of a cowardly backstab.

How can I, as a European citizen, trust in the democratic legitimation of the EU, if politicians can just try again and again until they get what they want, even if it is against the will of the people? _Especially_ if it’s about a law that expressively excludes politicians?

If this passes – and looks like it will – this will forever be a stain on the history of the European Union.

    17. Are politicians still exempt here? Like, the people who are supposed to be the most transparent won’t have their messages scanned? Like, the people with an extraordinary ability to, say, traffic a child will be free to do so?

    18. hasiho_tambara on

Europeans be like: „It’s bad when Russia and China do it but it’s good if we do it. This is important to protect our freedom and democracy.“

    19. Do criminals really use social media and normal chatting platforms for crime? Can’t imagine someone using WhatsApp to sell 100 kg of cocaine

    20. The biggest hate mongers disguise themselves as hurting others out of love or kindness. Because it muddies the water when there are people sincerely championing those beliefs.

If you consider Epstein and friends pin political pushes behind a façade of protecting children, it doesn’t take much to see how putting a preemptive finger on everyone’s pulse – including minors – in the long term will lead to anything but safety.

    21. The entire world is grim at the moment. I’ve seen anecdotal reports of people here in the UK being arrested for making comments online about the genocide in Gaza.

Between that sort of thing, the UK’s own obsession with ID for the Web and Chat Control, I genuinely fear where we are heading.

IMO under 16s should be banned from owning devices that can accessing the Internet. Forcing ID checks and scanning client devices is not the way forward.

Before we know it people will be arrested because they’ve taken an interest in, say, Communism and make an offhand remark about it in a positive way.

Convinced their is some corruption going on both in the UK and EU. After all, forcing people to associate their real ID to their Web presence allows advertisers print money.
