I provided commentary on this paper for a few news sources. There’s no evidence this is actually camouflage and the authors mention it briefly as a potential mechanism that could have driven this evolution.

Again, this is one of a few hypotheses, and honestly one that does not make much sense – though I’m largely unaware of the greater ecological context of the spider.
