Either improve the working conditions and wages of local workers, or issue more visas to bring in more foreign workers. You can guess which path the Japanese government chose.

So often that’s not true though: smoking in restaurants, phone zombies everywhere not looking where they’re walking, they do talk on trains too when in group, groups of people suddenly stopping on the sidewalk completely oblivious to the fact they’re blocking traffic, and traffic / driving behavior… don’t even get me started on that. Japanese love to tell each other how considerate they are but I don’t find them on average more considerate of other people than in other countries.
I think it’s just that when a foreigner makes an infraction they take notice of it while it wouldn’t even breach their awareness if a Japanese person did the same thing.

Ever since Takaichi-san got elected and all those non-stop bad news regarding the foreign residents policies started coming out I’ve been feeling very unwelcome here and experiencing a lot of negative emotions.

Last year our agency did a survey to assess the satisfaction of the employees. Some of our japanese colleagues came back (anonymously) saying they want our team to include japanese speakers only… We’re an international company with international clients. And the only people who do not speak Japanese are the management who never have to work with them and the people who pay them. It was so unbelievably stupid and kind of racist and pissed me off.

Japanese want but hate to accommodate gaijin workers willing to come to Japan to help so they will never get enough workers to help support occupations that Japanese themselves deem it too low for their rank.

Japan needs to raises wages for its own citizens. The only people who can work for the cost of minimum wage in Japan are people from from poorer countries, who see they yen as stronger than their own currency.
