    1. >As Fox News’s hyping of Trump’s initial rally falls flat, a media critic explains how Trump and Fox alike are using this moment to push a larger, more sinister agenda—and why that, too, is failing.

      >After Donald Trump kicked off his personalized celebration of America’s 250th birthday with a rally on the National Mall on Wednesday night, news accounts described the event as very sparsely attended. Trump himself practically begged for more people to show up to the next event set for July 4. Amusingly, this comes after Fox News madly hyped the Wednesday rally in an effort to drum up excitement.

      >But then, as Matt Gertz of Media Matters reports in a good piece on all this, Fox grappled with the bad initial turnout by largely avoiding any discussion of it. We think that’s pretty revealing. So we talked to Gertz about all of it: We discuss why Trump’s gala is so important for the broader, more sinister Trump-Fox project that’s underway, the real reason Trump-Fox want our the 250th anniversary to be a celebration of Trump’s “personalist” rule, and what it will really mean if it’s all a bust.

It truly is amazing how the entire circus around Trump has rained all over America’s 250th celebration. One of the most back patting, jingoist countries in the history of the world cant even get it up for a milestone celebration.
      Incredible

    3. Happy 250th birthday America! The pool is out of service, the house is half demolished and the neighbors are all staying home with their lights off. No one can afford cake or gas to come for a visit but look on the bright side. He hasn’t decided to improve Mount Rushmore. Yet.

Just want to say that I live in DC and the weather has been fucking gorgeous this week after a little bit of rain Monday. Really could not have asked for better weather.

      So it’s not that.

    5. It’s like the Superbowl halftime show. The only people hyped about that online was Fox News, Trump, and MAGA propaganda accounts on X. As MAGA in general did not really care it turned out, when it was live that is

What would be great is if fox realized the ratings would be so low that they just didn’t cover it at all and put on the movie 1776 instead on a 24 hour loop.

    7. 250 is the amount of ducks that will be dead in the Lincoln Memorial Algae Pool by July 04.

Just watched a local news segment (WRC 4,my childhood station). Kinda nauseating.

Yes, pretty empty at the time but these segments can be like that. Only interviewed one or two people but the reporter, Megan McGrath had that cheery vapidness of a local car dealership ad trying to get you to come on down.

A mockup of The Arch was prominent in several shots. Obviously placed near the center of the Mall in direct line with the Capitol, famous now more for violent “tourists” than the Smithsonian museums flanking it. At one point she mentioned it and called it “somewhat controversial” with a cheerleader chuckle.

I lived in that area my whole life, moving only three years ago. I don’t think I ever want to go back.

    9. I assume there will be another real or staged assassin attempt. I want nothing to do with that and im not going any where near DC. It just doesnt feel safe to be there.

Who would’ve thought the 250 would actually represent the attendance number.

    11. Far_Bar_7020 on

      DC resident here.

Most of us just continue our lives and try to avoid the mall and downtown right now.

I’ve talked to some tourists while out for work. Many are from Florida. I just try to show them some kindness because I’m a brown man and they need the cognitive dissonance.

Meanwhile, hotels have held their prices higher despite it usually being off season.

It’s a slow summer tourism and hospitality wise.

    12. I live nearby and I don’t feel any incentive to showing up. His events are a “privilege” to attend. Meaning, I would be on camera as a background prop with nothing fun to engage with. Nothing for ME to do. It’s always just an ego thing for him. Gimme a $100 at least to cover gas, parking, and a bottle of water from the food truck.

    13. If I came to your house and the lawn was dead and the pool was full of algae and half the house was demolished and there were cage fights in the front yard I’d think you lived in a pretty shitty neighbourhood.

    14. Trump ruined this event by inserting himself and making it political. Only MAGA people want to go to his hate fest.

    15. helvetica_unicorn on

Who wants to go to that tacky trashy Dump fest? There’s so many interesting and actually historical places to visit in and near D.C. This administration hijacked the A250 celebration and turned into a cheesy birthday party that makes Chuck E Cheese look dignified.

    16. There are people still trying to recover their reputation after being caught attending his last party.

    17. Don’t show Trump the pictures from the Bi-Centennial celebration. The difference in crowd sizes alone will send him into a furious rage. And…..Ford was president. Dude wasn’t even elected and was hated for pardoning the only president to ever resign in disgrace. Think about Donny.

He wants to be liked so badly. But it’ll just never happen. Not even the people he gives our tax dollars away to like him, they just stick around for the payout. I might be poor but damn at least I have friends lol.

Its so sad. 250 should be a real celebration and its such a dour, melancholy year

    20. HistoryNerd101 on

Besides only having a core group of political followers, he really is just a horrible salesman

I remember the bicentennial celebration in 76. The stark contrast to this year’s lack of excitement is really crazy.

    22. WinterAd4216 on

DC and the surrounding areas are mostly Democrat. When you see large crowds at these events, a good portion is the locals going. When I lived in DC everyone headed down the mall to participate in 4th of July, Xmas lighting ceremony, etc. No one in DC wants to go. And the tourist who are going are MAGA faithful and that’s just not enough to make it feel successful.

    23. Rough-Breadfruit-611 on

Why would anyone go there and risk 30 years in jail for accidentally touching water or paint flakes? Not to mention the thousands of AI flock cameras they have now.

    24. CarlYaz1967 on

I can’t wait to visit DC once this fuckstick is gone and the country starts coming back to normal.

This is the only president in my lifetime that wants to divide America. It’s so sick and gross. It’s like bizarro world America.
