Canada is now eligible to participate in the Eurovision song contest after CBC/Radio-Canada became a full member of the European Broadcasting Union.

In last fall’s federal budget, the government said it was looking at getting Canada into the international song contest.

Eurovision, which has been running for decades, features performers from various countries and is co-ordinated by the European Broadcasting Union.

The broadcasting union says Canada became a full member after a vote today at its general assembly.

A spokesperson for CBC/Radio-Canada says full members are eligible to participate in the contest.

The spokesperson said the public broadcaster would have more to say about the song contest later.

I don’t know how this event works, but I vote we send Courtney LaPlante or Unleash the Archers!

People politicizing this and losing their collective minds in just a few seconds…

Ahhh I thought this was a pipe dream! I’m sure the naysayers will be here shortly but I love Eurovision and this has me so excited!

    5. Unpopular opinion maybe but as a European this contest has peaked some 10-15 years ago.

    6. I know that many immigrants will be happy about it, should it be, myself included. It’s a fun informal yet professional week long party – with exposure that brings tourism and experiences of and from other countries. Yes, last few years had a bit more negativity over Russia and Israel, but it was still a well done event, with positive impacts. We’ll see how it goes.

It’s also one of the few world wide events that has zero to do with the USA, so there’s that.

You need to be eligible ? I thought you just needed to show up drunk waving the EU flag. Isn’t that how Australia got in.
