„On a stage as big as this, the head coach is responsible for all the results,“ Hong said at his postmatch press conference. „Ultimately, I made wrong decisions that led to this outcome. There’s nothing more, nothing less to it.“

Hong also defended his choice to bench captain Son Heung-min at the start of the match. The veteran talisman had started his 12 previous World Cup matches, dating to his first tournament in 2014 when Hong was in his first tour of duty as the national team boss.

„I felt it would be better for us to put him into the match in the second half, when he would have more space, rather than from the beginning when the opposing players would have more energy,“ Hong said.

You were wrong. People make mistakes. Resigning immediately is the right thing to do.

    3. Well duh.

Low league teams prepare and enact tactics better than this lot did.

There much be absolutely zero game planning and game tactics in the training sessions because the players looked lost, all they could do was pass around.

Not his fault when they team had zero urgency. They played like toddlers at daycare.

Would be nice if he could give us more details into what he was thinking (or wasn’t). Simply saying „Sorry my fault“ doesn’t cut it.

    6. The craziest part is he doesn’t need to do anything. It’s his dumbass back three that he insists on playing. All of Koreas top club players (Kangin, Son, Minjae) are used to playing back four. Korea has no wingbacks to support a back three. Just let the squad play how they’re used to playing ffs. Literally do nothing, shut up, sit back and win.

The coach wasn’t strategically thinking about the opposing team’s own morale. Son is famous, and benching Korea’s star player gave the opposing players the confidence that now is their time, and they made good use of what they likely percieved as their lucky golden opportunity, making them play even harder.
