When the next crash happens it’s going to be really fucking messy.

You know, nobody in Ireland actually has a problem with immigrants and refugees. Except for the racists, of course.

Telling people this is happening and giving them a big fat dunno as to when and how it’s happening is not acceptable… you announce the thing when you have a plan as to how to do it. Especially as any actions they take or the state takes regarding work school and accommodation depend on that information anyways

Why invite people into the country whom you can not house?
Why are foreign nationals getting subsidised housing and the right to work?
Why were hospitality businesses paid to profit from refugees instead of catering to the tourists like they were built for?

This genuinely seems too harsh and without adequate contingencies in place. The state is terrible at over promising and relying on very temporary arrangements.
How exactly is this going to work? The war, if anything, seems to be getting progressively worse at the moment, without much prospect of change given the geopolitical landscape.
This is a mess. You’ve now got elderly and vulnerable people being chucked out on the street.
All I can say is based on the downvotes is that it seems I now live in a country increasingly represented online by pricks. Disappointing Ireland – very disappointing.

If they’re from western Ukraine, they can go home.
*Economist* had a piece the other week about the residential property boom in Ukraine. People making a killing renting their properties to internal refugees from the east of the country fleeing the active warzone. Many of the rental properties are vacant because the owners are „refugees“ in Europe.

It’s a damn flipping mess.

I don’t mind giving the actual refugees from Ukraine support.
However, the reckless refugee system in this country (which was massively cheered on by this sub until about a month ago) has done huge and possibly irreparable damage to this country and to our youth’s prospects.
I don’t understand why well meaning left leaning people are so easily tricked by the agendas of the rich asset owning classes.

Question it says many of them work locally… doesn’t that mean they can enter the house rat race just like anyone else?
Excuse my ignorance but shouldn’t putting them up like this always have been temporary until they settled and secured jobs ?

Ah the pro russian shils saying they can go home as „its safe“. Odd the same folks don’t say this to any other nationality.
Google kherson safari or lviv bombing raids if you think its safe to send children back.

Rent or buy like everybody else so

To be fair it’s time to join everyone else in Ireland looking for housing which is shit I know but such is life unfortunately.
Can’t fund it forever so was always gonna happen with the same response.

Im gona say it. That headline is intentional to provoke sympathy. Those children arent without parents, many of whom are likely working. But you won’t see a headline saying „working parents face eviction“

I’m sure this will make affordable houses magically appear

The elderly should be rehomed as they most likely can’t work and need help. That’s fine
The parents of the children are most likely working and not paying rent…for the last 4 years now….it’s time they find housing like the rest of us…what do they want? Free housing for the rest of their lives while working full time?. Bit unfair to the rest of us that are working no?.
They most likely will not return home when the war is over. So they can find a place to live now.
We have supported 120,000 people for four years. Not the government, the Irish tax payer has supported them. Time to join the hellscape of renting in Ireland. We can’t pay forever. They are very welcome for the help they have received.

The obvious solution – which somehow nobody ever reaches for – is to employ them in jobs that support housing construction, so they are building their own (and the rest of our) homes.
Efficient_Log_2007 on
They have come and for the most part have taken jobs, got involved in tidy towns and similar groups, their kids are settled and if they stay another few years theres a few young lads locally who will go on to play for Cavan. Absolutely lovely people.
The women are stunning also.

I think initially they didn’t foresee the amount of Ukrainian men who would be seeking refuge here and only done the figures on the woman and children.

Wonder if they are going for an IPAS instead? There’s more money in it I believe.
