Alex Stamos made another good analogy about it being like drilling a hole in the windshield of a car

So digital wallets (including apple wallet) are a risk none of us should take is the message i’m reading here. Don’t trust anyone with your info

How does Apple’s new incoming CEO feel about encryption and privacy? Is he willing to stand up against attack on encryption and privacy?

Great analogy, I also don’t want the cops to have a key. Now, let’s talk booby traps for both.

I always think about red dawn set in modern times and flock cameras being control by an invading force.

I would have said you can leave a key under the mat for the burglars but the cops will get it too.

    7. Yeah, says apple that’s giving all the Chinese users‘ data to the government.

Apple is the most hypocritical company in the world.

    8. Also dirty cops or people who are supposed to be good acting in bad faith.

    9. thats why i leave dozens of wrongly cut house keys all over the place. good luck

    10. Nevermind the burglar, I’m more concerned that bad cops will use the key to put surveillance inside your home.

    11. The contrapositive is just as stark a warning:

      > *If you are foolish enough to leave a key for a burglar to find, a cop will too.*

    12. WTF. Who puts a key under the matt, or anywhere else for that matter for cops? It’s for family, neighbours, etc. Such a dumb (spelled with a “b”) analogy.

The CIA NSA and military backdoored the iPhone over a decade ago the skill gap between government hackers and the private sector is insane

Simple. Just change to smart lock . No key need to put under the mat.

Tim Cook’s point isn’t really about Apple. It’s about math. A backdoor that only “good guys” can use has never existed. The moment a special access mechanism is created, it becomes a target for criminals, hostile governments, insiders, and hackers. The debate isn’t whether the key will be abused — it’s whether it happens next year or ten years from now.

I would leave the key for the burglar any day over leaving it for the cop
