*While official Statistics Canada figures show a roughly 25% decline in Canadian residents returning from the U.S. last year, cellphone data compiled by researchers at the University of Toronto’s School of Cities found that the year-over-year drop in cross-border trips was closer to 42%.*
*Myrtle Beach, S.C., the number of trips by Canadians was down 65% year-over-year.*
*Florida cities of Panama City, Orlando, Cape Coral, Miami and Naples, the number of Canadian visitors fell by 50% or more.*
*The self-imposed travel ban has extended to high-tech, financial and industrial centres, signalling that cross-border business and trade patterns have fundamentally shifted over the last year.*
*“People are not visiting multiple metros, and it could be that folks are popping over for that quick trip to see grandma, but they’re not doing the side trip for work or for play,“ she said.*
*The cellphone data also includes freight-related travel by truck drivers, who are generally excluded from the government’s „return trip“ figures that are widely used to gauge cross-border visits.*
It’s not making me patriotic, it’s making me wonder who is so bad at counting border crossings!!

Our family had committed to “no US travel” plan as long as the orange head is still in White House. Including not to visit my relatives there – they can come to Canada. 🇨🇦

These numbers make a lot more sense. I know it’s anecdotal but no one I know is going to the U.S. except one friend who has to go for business and one Disney adult I know.
Does the 25% decrease include that much of the cross border traffic is trucks that continue to ship products back and forth and isn’t actually reflecting the true decrease in tourism?

Unless I’m being paid to cross the border I am not going back.

Serious question from someone who has not entered the USA since Trump (down from 5 trips a year)
Could the increase in buy as you go travel SIMs contributed to this data? 🤷♂️

Who wants to get kidnapped and thrown in a detention center. With the trade war, it’s just a matter of time before they significantly target Canadians.

I’d bet even if it Kamala was voted president we would go less too. Current guy is the symptom, not the underlying problem

Good. I am personally not crossing the border while the current administration is in power. Even after that it will take a lot of hard work for the US to earn my trust again.

CBC is bringing up that UoT ”study” again? Firstly, that’s old news. Secondly, that study isn’t peered review and relies on third party ad tracking software that can be defeated by the App Tracking Transparency function on iPhones. Thirdly, because of the focus on app data, the result is skewed towards younger people who have less money and time to travel. There’s no comparison to Canadian travel to other countries, for example. A sloppy study all around.

I have to cross pre-clearance at Pearson in about a week so I’m really hoping this is true on that day.
