Is this the system that pulls as much power as a small neighborhood? As they will be deployed in small numbers, I’m sure things will be fine, but it illustrates the scale of upgrades we need to our grid for full electrification

We dont need cheap Chinese vehicles when the Mercedes EQS is only $175,000.

Between advances like flash charging and solid state batteries seemingly around the corner, the future’s looking pretty good for BEVs.

    4. Year 2025. Fast charging sites In Canada;

      236 Tesla 250 kW

      150 FLO 320 kW

      120 Electrify Canada / America 150 kW

      0 BYD 1,000 kW

      0 Tesla 500 kW

This will take a decade or more to build a semi-decent network. Chances are that relations with China will sour again and it’ll remain incomplete.

Honestly, faster charging is not the way to make EV accessable or convenient. It’s missing the point.

They are only useful for road trips, and unless your commute is 300+km a day, you’d likely never need to use a level 3 fast charger.

We need to be focusing on making charging at home (especially people living in condos) and workplace possible. Just think about the amount of time your car is just sitting doing nothing everyday, your car could be using the idle time charging at level 2 (3.8-9.6kW) chargers while you sleep. My 70 km daily commute can be replenished in about 3 hrs while I sleep. If your commute is less than 40km, even 120V 12A from your household outlet is more than sufficient.

We are applying the concept of going to a designated location to „fuel up“ your car like an internal combustion engine car when it is not even a problem to begin with in an EV. You can just charge it at home overnight when you’re not using it.

I don’t see flash charging ever coming at scale. The infrastructure to accommodate that is nuts.

Quick charging is something you only need to do if you drive for Uber or are on a road trip – for almost every situation, charging at home or at work is strictly better.

    9. Province’s should start installing solar at parking lots and have fast chargers installed.

    10. Lol. Where? They need a 1 megawatt connection. Very few places where there is distribution and capacity to do that.

I don’t want to buy electric cars made in country county that has corrupt fascist regime that has history of abusing minorities

So I’m happy BYD is here to provide an alternative to Tesla

    12. I used to be stark against any Chinese tech here cause of spying and whatnot. Now? I really don’t care anymore. Between China and tech billionaires my data’s going to some asshole regardless, it’s all the same.

That or the battery swap that takes 2mins or less. China has that

It’s game over for North American EVs

This is horrible for the lifespan of your battery pack, fyi. Fast charging, especially a 12C fast charge, severely stresses the cells and degrades them much faster than overnight level 2 charging.

But it’ll be nice on road trips.

    15. The government really needs to start rolling out SMR or MMR (medium) to backstop all the electric projects everyone is talking about while the backbone infrastructure remains locked in 1990. Housing developments are all designed around 200A per home. A 200A home is incompatible with a gas free future, yet there is nothing even being discussed at any higher level to address the coming shortfall.

how many miles/kilometers does a 5 min flash charge provide on a typical byd vehicle out of curiosity?

EDIT: google says about 250 miles in ideal conditions so lets say 175, that’s close enough to internal combustion engines to completely upend current consumer trends, they need to figure this out for motorcycles asap

Im sure an 18 wheeler could get further on gasoline than a „flash“ ev charge, but most folks drive things closer to a prius
