This is 2nd? (3rd?) time she has stepped down as leader. I am very curious to see if the GPC can *finally* move past her, preferably without ripping themselves apart over foreign policy this time

I wonder if they managed to convince Mike Morrice to run. He doesn’t seem particularly interested, but he might step forward if no viable candidates emerge.

Looking forward to seeing who they choose.
A couple things stood out to me from the article:
>The entry fee for the leadership application is $15,000, and candidates must sign up at least 200 new members, including at least 50 “young greens,” meaning members aged 12 to 29.
They allow members as young as 12?
>Candidates must also be able to speak both English and French, though Indigenous candidates are exempt.
Interesting/odd they would provide that exemption – I guess it’s a way to encourage more indigenous candidates to come forward? And I suppose the Greens tend to be a non-factor in Quebec anyway, so it wouldn’t matter as much as in most parties.

Elizabeth May is the Green Party. They’ll be losing their only seat in parliament if she’s truly done done, and not just leader done. And if she does intend to still run as an MP, she’ll just end up being defacto leader again anyhow.
If the NDP aren’t projected to recover from rump status in the next election, there is no world where the Greens make any gains along side it.

Who is going to run for the leadership race, Dimitri Lascaris who almost won in 2020? Doubt Green Party gains much traction under him because his most reasonable views are held by Avi Lewis.

As much hate as May is getting, it’s important to highlight that other Green Party leaders have consistently underperformed and failed to win seats in Parliament. Likewise, it’s hard May to pass the torch on when no one is reaching for it.

Can’t wait for the inevitability of Elizabeth May becoming leader again in 2029!
Jokes aside, I can’t imagine there’s many viable candidates. If I had to spitball, though:
– Mike Morrice
– David Coon
– Steven Guilbeault (highly doubt it).
Out of those three, the only one who has highly fluent French I believe is Guilbeault. David Coon has been a NB MLA for a decade and still barely has a grasp of the language and I’m unsure about Mike Morrice.

Should just join with ndp as a joint ticket at this point, they should nominate someone who can speak French to help Avi out too

I think the Green Party in Canada would be better served by just calling it quits. Avi Lewis isn’t going to give them any breathing room on policy, their single-issue is totally marginalized from the conversation, and they simply don’t have the resources or unified philosophy to put anything else forward.
It was a good run, but there’s nothing they can accomplish at this point that wouldn’t be more effectively done in another party.

Their last leader just extracted money from the party while using it as her personal ego pump.
They’re going to get some other train wreck and then May will be back in leadership. That or the party will disintegrate.

Why don’t the NDP and the Green merge together? I mean, environmental protection and tackling climate change is primarily for the sake of helping humans beings having a better life. No, the Earth doesn’t need to be „saved“, but we do!
At least it could create a sliver of hope to have a viable third federal political party no?
(and no, I don’t believe the BQ is a viable federal political party)

Unless she’s going to resign her seat i’m not sure why GPC thinks this time will be different?
It’s just going to be a mess all over again with the new leader fighting for the spotlight and authority inside the party. I guess whoever takes the job will go in knowing May is running the show in Ottawa and you’re mostly a organizer.
Good luck to whoever wins.
