Part of the reason is that the States themselves have huge say over energy and environmental policy and big states like New York and California make use of it.
In Canada, it’s only at the federal level we see any sort of interest in environmental policy – which makes it brittle
Though it’s worth pointing out that Ontario has cut its emissions by an impressive amount
Not surprising, despite being hostile towards renewable energy, they have a more business friendly regulatory environment, meanwhile we are about to kill a rail project between two of our most populated cities.
There are still blue states trying to reduce. Canada also had a big head start when it comes to stuff like energy. Places like Alberta and Sask erase any progress the other provinces make and that’s only going to get worse now. Then there’s stuff like Ford destroying and resisting wind for most of his tenure.
Yeah I mean when you have provinces like Quebec, Manitoba, Ontario and BC with largely green power grids it does make us look way better. We need more of that, more nuclear, more hydro, more solar, more wind and other possibilities like thermal, tidal and all.
canada did 3 things wrong
1. pursued polices such as carbon taxes, which backfired and created resentment against environmental policies overall.
2. Drastically increased its population by 8-9% after covid while trying to slash emissions.
3. Focused on perfeclty green tech that are expensive or not fesabile large scale vs mostly green tech that is quite popular.
Any economy that embraces services / software is going to see substantial emissions decreases, pretty muhc regardless of any executive climate policy or lackthereof.
The US is the leader in digital services and software in the world.
