Yay capitalism.
How is this legal anywhere ?
For any ticketed thing.
Does this affect international flights?
I have an upcoming international flight this weekend, this news is making me nervous!
hopefully they will get compensated.
Overbooking is fine so long as the airlines are responsible for paying compensation out when the flight is inevitably oversold.
Filling as many seats as possible is a good thing both for ticket prices and the environment.
My friend once flew business class in JAL. Japanese salaryman asked him to change seats so he can sit with a friend, he refused then when he asked for champagne they told him it‘s all out, but later served it to these salarymen.
Personally I avoid flying with any Japanese company because I‘m honestly afraid about how I‘ll be treated as visible minority in an emergency situation.
Overbooking is stupid and should be outlawed in my opinion, but it‘s not that big of a problem. As a frequent flyer it never happened to me or anyone I know (which means nothing when talking about 100 millions of customers, I know, but even statistically it‘s „rare“. Sucks once it happens to you, but at least you‘ll get compensated (even though not enough) and you still have your health. As someone who got permanently disabled from „rare“ side effects from a medical product, there are worse things out there. It is unfair how these companies really only follow the bare minimum of certain laws, but if you as an infividual break their terms of service over some small print they will deny you service. Fuck capitalism.
