    1. For most countries, this seems too high.

If it were people who’ve taken some French language classes, I’d be more inclined to believe it, but that doesn’t mean you can actually hold a conversation in French.

That seems weird. Do so many kids in Germany still learn Latin as second foreign language?

I guess the distribution of French classes in school must be different in other regions. In my family, only my dad doesn’t speak French.

I’d be surprised if that many Greeks know French, too.

    3. The UK (not in EU) is only at 19% if you’re counting basic bonjour/ca va?/ca va bien merci et tu? conversations. There is no way that number’s accurate.

There is no way that the UK is higher than other Romance countries and Germany right?

I’m fluent in French and I am English. That number is way too high. Most people look at me like an alien that I can speak French. I do know a fair few other French speakers but it’s probably closer to 1-5% of people.

    6. Does „holding a conerversation in French“ mean french kissing or oral sex?

The number for the Nederlands seems suspiciously high – unless saying baguette and bonjour counts as a conversation

As a Brit I highly doubt the figure for the U.K. If it is just knowing some basic French and being able, for instance to ask for a beer or a croissant I would say it should be a bit higher. If it is having an actual conversation in the language I would think it would be closer to 10%. Certainly can’t believe it’s higher than Spain and Italy, which speak Romance languages and border France.

    9. So the UK is back in the EU? Great news!

Interesting that there are more French speakers in Luxembourg than in France itself.

      What is this shit?!

Absolutely bullshit for Denmark at least. No way about 1/10 Danes can go full omelette du fromage.

    11. Not a chance 19% of people in England can “hold a conversation” in French.

    12. Uknow-it-makes-sense on

There’s no way 19% of the UK population can converse meaningfuly in French.

I think Romania is credible. Maybe 15%. 10% I guess are fluent enough. I’ve had colleagues in school that learn it really well.

Not having data for Switzerland, a French speaking country, is wild.

The Netherlands is definitely not standing at 29%, these numbers are beaucoup de merde.

I was forced to attend French classes in school for 7 years. I hated it ! All I remember is „Quest que vous avez prepares pour a jour dui? Nous avon prepares blah blah“.

29% in NL? If you count Papa fume une pipe and comment ca va as conversations, sure but there is no way in hell almost a third of the population in 2026 can hold anything resembling a conversation

My father’s paternal grandfather, born in Serbia, lived in Paris for 8 years with his youngest son (my grandfather was his oldest son) in the late 1920s and early 1930s. His son died there and he then returned to Serbia (Kingdom of Yugoslavia).

Obviously he spoke French, but he died in the 1950s, before I was born in the 1960s. There were thousands of people like him — Serbs from the Kingdom of Yugoslavia — who lived in France in the 1920s/1930s and spoke French.

I also speak French. I am Canadian. I speak a dozen other languages too.

Absolutely no way 19% of the UK can hold a conversation in French. We all study French at school but practically no one can speak it beyond “bonjour” and “merci”.

As a Brit who thought he could hold a conversation but in fact can’t. I think the British figure might be slightly inflated..

    21. i think there is another lvl after „Hold a Conversation in French“ and thats Hold a Conversation in French with a native speaker

This reminded me of that one finnish candidate lady who lied about knowing french before an interview and then when interviewer checked her she started to make up words.

Bullshit. I’m swedish and I refuse to believe that one in ten swedes can carry an actual normal conversation in French
