Gee-whiz, I’m shocked. Does this mean that the student visa system is exploited and that the asylum system is too lax?
Because that would be shocking in a country that takes their border as seriously as we do…
We should be thankful. Think of the food for a start!
Deny and return all. Unless there is a civil war during the time of study, then it should be automatically declined.

I’ve witnessed this first hand. Used to teach classes at my local university. Meant to have a class of about 50+ students, only about 10-15 turned up on average, some weeks none. Complained to the course leader and he told me they needed to report the students who didn’t turn up since they were on student visas and attendance was conditional on their stay in the country. Some universities are literal visa mills. No point being annoyed because every week a new scandal breaks
Perhaps it is time to stop student visas for countries where people end up claiming asylum.
We should have a legal route to claim that doesn’t require you to be in the country
My friend’s wife lived in an eight person flat with seven Pakistani women when she came to the UK for university. Every one of the women were working in fake marriages in order to enable them to stay in the UK permanently. They talked about it openly, shared tips, and all used the same corrupt solicitors. This was back in the 2000s.
It’s really good that we’re starting to cut down these abuses, it’s 20 years too late but still. For countries like Pakistan, which aren’t a complete basket case and have a functional state, we can apply pressure to take people back and threaten them with general visa conditions, since being able to visit and work in Britain is valuable to them. That’s what Labour is now doing, which is great.
It’s harder with Afghanistan though.

It has been extremely obvious for a long time that the student visa system is being used as a backdoor asylum/immigration route. Only the dishonest or delusional claimed otherwise.
