The rate of sea level rise has doubled in 10 years. In 2023 alone, global sea level rise was 4.3 mm.

    1. Well under way, except in the US where Trump is scrapping renewables for coal and more oil, seemingly just out of spite.

    2. Why does everyone forget that the polar icecaps melted 10,000 years ago and we had massive sea level rises – example UK and Ireland no longer connected to Europe and Tasmania no longer connected to Australia and the same right around the world.

      Does it mean that?

It rose by x, therefore it will rise by z?

Sea levels rise and drop year on year; it’s not consistent like you say.

      This is a false premise.

Not to say there isn’t a concern, but this isn’t the concern.

    4. Nitpick on the 5 cm figure: that assumes the rate stays frozen at 4.3 mm/yr for the next decade. But the headline finding is that the rate doubled in ten years, so it’s even more than that. If the last decade’s trend simply repeats, the rate will be ~8.6 mm/year by 2036, and the decade’s total comes out to 6.5+ cm, not 5.

The report has an interesting stat about the accerlation: 16% of ALL ocean heat gain since 1955 happened after 2018. The ocean has absorbed ~90% of excess heat from emissions, thermal expansion alone drives a good chunk of the sea level rise, even before adding ice sheets to the calculation. So 5 cm is the floor forecast of what could happen.
