      > It also raised concerns about age restrictions causing „disproportionate compliance burdens on American companies”.

No one is forcing them to do business here

Yeah, he wants to keep his access up to under 16 across the world…..for reasons

    3. If you ever wondered whether it was a good idea, now you know.

IIf Trump and Elon Musk both want something, chances are it’s a bad thing.

This is where the tech companies call their bribes in. All of those odious turds were front and centre at the inauguration for exactly this reason.

      Dear White House,

Why don’t you fuck off and mind your own business?

      Best regards

      UK Government

We should ban it from 12pm today just for this reason. If Trump wants it, do the opposite.

Once again, why is the cheeto coloured paedophile commenting on what our democratically elected government does?

They aren’t banning Social Media for Under 16s!.

They’re demanding that All Adults Provide ID to Access Social Media!

Let’s Call It for what It Is.

If 16 year olds are going to be voting, banning social media for under 16s is a problem.

    12. RepsUpMoneyDown on

Ludicrious display of mental gymnastics going on in UK reddit today

Trump / Elon gesture agaisnt the state control of all social media for 16 year olds (and by proxy, everyone else) and people jump at the gun to say „actullay its good!!“ out of spite of their disdain for american politics.

Starmer could say he wants you to check in via face scan to a gov portal everyday and if trump said „thats a bad idea“ you’d seemingly jump at the chance to say „its great it means the goverment can keep me safe and only criminals opt out!“

They’re not to ban kids. They’re going to ban everyone until you show a digital ID.

    14. I came off social media – other than reddit about 15 years ago and I am glad I did

    15. But trump banned tiktok for what 48 hours so that he could force a sale to a US owned company. Sounds slightly hypocritical to me.

    16. Timo-the-hippo on

Is anyone stupid enough to believe any government is banning social media to protect kids? They literally just want to get rid of pesky free speech by requiring ID for all statements.

    17. JasterBobaMereel on

Guess what the individual states in the USA are currently rolling out … the exact same age restrictions

    18. Not surprised the group of nonces want kids to have access to social media.

    19. CaptainMatthew1 on

Stoped clock and all that. If it takes that asshole weighing in to stop this didital authoritarian push then so be it. We need parents to parent again and use the tools available. We need or make companies to implement those tool. Stop punishing and treating the vast majority as if it’s their fault. It’s not.

    20. Clockrobber on

Nooo please don’t cut off our stream of propaganda from the teens noooo

    21. ASavageHobo on

I’m all for kids not using social media, but I get the feeling the government just wants all of us registered online with our ID’s.

    22. woodenheart94 on

As much as I don’t think children should be on social media, banning something doesn’t eliminate it. War on drugs for example.
The internet as a whole gives us access to education, entertainment and danger.
Making people have to register to prove their age also means that fully capable adults are going to try to get around it.
We took a driving safety class in school about the dangers and tragedy of dangerous driving with speeches from parents who have sadly lost their kids from such accidents .
That was impactful to us all and I think the same could be taught in schools about internet safety.

    23. SmallPromiseQueen on

Their reasons for not wanting to ban it will be nefarious and self serving and it doesn’t mean that banning it is correct.

    24. Exiled-Austrian on

We can try our best to help out kids but let’s be honest this social media ban (and the attempt to extend this to online gaming) is actually an effort in mass surveillance and and attempt to end online anonymity for law biding citizens. The government are not to be trusted. Trust yourself, protect your kids, keep the treasonous system out of it all.

    25. QuietBookkeeper4712 on

tbh it is a really dumb thing much like all of these stupid Internet laws that won’t work, is a massive security risk my forcing everyone to upload ID, and is an abdication of responsibility of the parents who already have tools available.

      They’re called parental controls.

    26. Significant_Ask_7534 on

Banning social media for under 16’s means you can put forward your viewpoints and beliefs through the school system so you the kids don’t have to think for themselves. Pretty effective way of indoctrinating the youth to vote for you tbh.

    27. Oh great, because the pedo in chief gets involved and doesn’t want it, suddenly everyone in here supports our governments push for the OSA, digital ID’s and now this ban.

Just because that pos is a pos and has a different motive for not wanting this ban, thats doesn’t suddenly mean the ban is a good thing and doesn’t mean that our government has good intentions with it.

I really do live on a planet filled to the brim with short sighted, easily influenced, primitive apes…

    28. Hellstorm901 on

The under 16 ban on social media and the planned ban on preventing children speaking to adults in online games are completely unenforceable without digital ID and the UK copying China in separating the internet in the UK from the global web by blocking all connections going from or into the UK

Which makes it clear this is the intention, not protecting children, but creating authoritarianist mechanisms of control in order to try and protect the government from a growing Far Right

Sadly it’s unlikely the governments plans will be stopped as it’s become abundantly clear the government or someone within the government is operating a disinformation campaign to portray all critics of their online laws as being people who want to harm children in order to crush any attempt to stop them

Once again I will advocate my reasonable alternative to these laws

      – All ISP’s in the UK add an adult filter to existing and subsequent contracts

      – This filter uses a government database to block adult content identified by Ofcom

      – In order to disable this filter instead of age verifying on a website by website basis you instead just contact your ISP and request it be removed

      – When you remove the filter you have to agreed to a legally binding document that you are responsible for whoever uses your internet and what they use it for

      – The government creates new offences recognising a parent knowingly allowing their child to access inappropriate content is child abuse as a responsible parent who knows what their child is doing would stop them

      – Official reporting mechanisms are created for people and organisations to report accounts they suspect to be children knowingly accessing inappropriate content just as similar mechanisms exist for offline forms of suspected abuses

      – New laws are brought in so that in order for a child to have ownership of a mobile phone with online capability that phone must be slaved to a parental device which allows the parent to view what is being accessed on the child’s phone and powers are granted to schools to conduct checks on children’s phones to ensure that these guards are in place

This is more reasonable and effective at protecting children than authoritarianist laws
