I mean it’s real in the sense that it’s happening. But’s hardly a referendum based on real issues aka separation.

Smith said the question would be „Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?“

If that’s the question, it’s all a big show and not even Smith is pretending this is for real. So it’s just a big waste of time and money and national attention. A pre-planning meeting for the meeting that will plan to ask the real question.

    3. The irony is this is basically the same question asked in 1980 where Chretien claimed to not understand the question.

Still his argument is more over the Clarity Act which is a reprehensible law that I never see holding up to a constitutional challenge no matter how much effort Stephan Dion put in making it air tight. It fundamentally robs the provinces of the sovereignty to make their own decisions which they fully have. I wouldn’t get too comfortable shutting down a genuine referendum on basis of the clarity act alone. If your referendum result is backed by foreign nations, good luck explaining them this bullshit law you made up.

Not that the Alberta referendum should need parliamentary approval since it just gives the mandat to the government to do something. Its just a poll and would require a second referendum to be of any validity.
