The key phrase in the article: „**America does an excellent job generating wealth and a poor job translating that wealth into things we value.**“

But this is manifestly, by definition false. If „wealth“ cannot be translated into value, it is NOT wealth. It is propaganda, make believe, bait and switch, anything you may call it, but not wealth. Because wealth IS possession of things of value. The respectable NYT wrote an oxymoron.

The US is pathetically failing to generate wealth for ~ 80 – 90 % of its population.

It generates money. It makes it possible to possess some things, often well-advertised and useless things, which are harder to obtain somewhere else.

But the wealth, things that make you more of a human being — education, time with family, security with your health and your future, affordable quality food, ability to raise kids, ability (practical, not theoretical) to travel and see the world — those foundational values are not attainable by a large majority of the Americans. Despite huge per capita GDP.
