Toyohiro Akiyama war der erste Japaner, der 1990 mit der SojusTM11 ins All geschickt wurde. Er war weder ausgebildeter Astronaut noch Ingenieur. Er war ein Fernsehreporter, der täglich vier Schachteln Zigaretten rauchte. Auf die Frage, worauf er sich nach seiner Rückkehr zur Erde am meisten freue, antwortete er: „Ich kann es kaum erwarten, eine Zigarette zu rauchen.“

Wow! He went to space and all he could think of is cigarettes? Those things must be addictive like crack!

If we’re gonna allow a hardcore chainsmoker with zero training to go to space, then I don’t wanna hear nothin‘ about me needing to pass a physical fitness test to be an astronaut.
