Because they were unsure at that point if a viking ship can sail from Ireland to Denmark 1000 years ago. They build a replica to show it could indeed sail the entire journey. The replica completed the voyage from Roskilde to Dublin in 2007.

Yeah, the trees were from Laragh near Glendalough.
Always thought it was a bit weird that Dublin is given as the place of construction. That would mean bringing all those trees cross-country, through thick forest and bogland. The alternative is to just float them down river to Arklow (another „Viking“ town) and build the boat there…..

I always thought the Irish vikings were from western Norway, while the ones in England were from Denmark. Like all of history, it clearly isn’t quite that simple.
