      This hits in the feels.

As a man in my forties he’s been on so many shows that I’ve watched over the years. This really stings.

      RIP Uther Pendragon

    2. Between his Uther Pendragon and Krilitane headmaster, I also really loved his brief cameo on Galavant.

      Always a star.

    3. Oh wow, randomly thought about him today while I was listening to some awful dance music. „Real music has notes“ is a throwaway line that’s always stuck with me from Buffy, and here we are a few hours later.

      Seemed like a good guy.

    4. Spiderinahumansuit on

Well, shit. I know you should separate actors from their characters, but losing Giles feels like losing a dad.

    5. psioniclizard on

RIP and my heart goes out to his family and friends. I lost my dad when he was 72 and it’s to young honestly. Whatever people might think.

That’s sad. I’ve just started rewatching Buffy over the past few days, he really works well with the other cast members

    7. Striking_Smile6594 on

That’s a real shock, 72 isn’t even that old these days and he always seemed so healthy and full of life.

    8. What a brilliant actor. I loved him as Uther Pendragon and Captain Herc on Cabin Pressure. Much love from Nigeria.

    9. ScoopTheOranges on

The first celebrity death that made me gasp out loud since Alan Rickman. What an absolutely iconic actor, I grew up with Buffy and he was a huge part of my teenhood. Heartbreaking, especially for his daughters.

    10. DelGriffiths on

UK actors making it big in the US is the norm these days but his role in Buffy in the 90s really stood alone. Sad news.

    11. SuperReiyajin on

Giles was the father figure I think everyone watching Buffy wanted. He brought such a warmth to the character and his performance across the series was one for the ages. A genuine loss.

    12. TheDarkWarriorBlake on

It’s unexpected, despite his age, and weird that two actors from Buffy lost their lives in the same year, given it’s not a huge cast. Such a shame.

    13. -NearlyThere- on

One of many that knew him as the coffee ad man and for Buffy
Never heard a bad thing about him
One of the good ones taken too soon.

    14. fartsonyourchips on

He’ll always be the Gold Blend man to me. Real shame, 72 is young these days.

    15. FoxDesigner2574 on

That’s really sad. He’s been in so many things I’ve loved. Will toast him with a Nescafé tonight.

    16. So good in so much stuff and such a varied career rip

Loved him in repo and buffy and numerous others.

    17. Damn, that’s awful, still remember watching him in Merlin and Doctor Who when I was younger

    18. RabidFlamingo on

Only just watched Buffy this year and he was one of the best parts of it: it’s a tragedy. The man himself seemed like a class act too

    19. Man I was literally speaking to a friend yesterday about Buffy. Rip. So many memories as a kid growing up watching Buffy.

    20. Fear_of_the_darc on

So sad, he was great actor. He only lost his partner in December, devastating for his daughters to have lost both parents in such quick succession.

    21. runawaydebt on

This is so sad! His wife died last year too. At least he didn’t have to be without her for very long.

    22. Oh wow. Was wondering why haven’t seen him I. A while. This is so sad as he was an excellent character actor and a real treat when on screen. Will be sorely missed

    23. Will always remember him for The Prime Minister role in Little Britain. RIP to a legend.

    24. EsmeWeatherpolish on

Noooooo. Omg I’m So sad. Loved him in Buffy, Cabin Pressure, Merlin, Little Britain and recently in Ted Lasso. 72 is way too young. Also you can get vaccination for pneumonia. Get your vax people

    25. Rocky Horror is the one I remember him from. He played Frank-n-Furter in the stage version I saw in London around 1990, (Gina Bellman was also in that version).

    26. AxiosXiphos on

72 is young for a man who seemed in good health. I’m really gutted. Rest in Peace Anthony.

    27. Don’t forget the infamous Nescafé adverts from the 80s.

Real loss, such a likeable actor.

    28. Only-Childhood6691 on

Damn. RIP. One of my favorite actors with his appearances on Buffy and Merlin.

    29. Fuck … this is a sad one. I absolutely loved Buffy and he was fantastic as Giles. He’s one of my favourite characters of all time

    30. Cynical_Classicist on

I just saw it here! God, I remember him from Doctor Who, playing two on-screen villains, Uther on Merlin, Mr. Gently Benevolent on Bleak Expectations, so much! It feels so sudden!

    31. SnowyAbibliophobe on

Damn it. I opened reddit during an ad break while enjoying a rewatch of Buffy, the last scene I saw had Giles in a sombrero. And I see this news. Gutted, totally gutted.

    32. This man had the ability to make me really despise a character. Great actor and a massive loss.

    33. banoffeetea on

Absolutely gutted to hear that 🙁

Rest well Anthony, sorry for his family.

Really shocked. He’s such a staple in so many shows, always so memorable. Great actor.

Re-watching Buffy is hard these days, so many losses.

    34. Gosh that hits in the feels. We only recently finished a Buffy rewatch.

I was saying on a Dr who sub just the other day how he would have made an incredible Master.

    35. If you haven’t yet, listen to his work in the Radio 4 series „Cabin Pressure“. A masterpiece of voice acting.

    36. RIP. I gasped when I saw this. Buffy, the coffee commercials and Ted Lasso were my favorites.

I got the chance to meet him at a con a few years ago. Had my picture taken with him and then got it signed. I had read that his mother just had a birthday so I told him happy birthday to her. He was so happy and we chatted for a couple of minutes. He was such a lovely person.

    37. Potential-Bird-5826 on

Dammit dammit dammit. I guess Cordelia was right, one day he would wake up dead.

Damnation. Rest in peace Mr Head. Your work speaks for itself and you’ll be missed.

    38. urgnousernamesleft on

I met him once. I was working as a runner at an awards ceremony. He arrived from a West End show on the back of biker taxi. I was responsible for getting him prepped before he went on stage. He was incredibly charming and friendly with everyone backstage. He did his presenting slot, then afterwards actually came and found me to say thank you before he left. It stood out at the time as a lot of the celebs were hard work.

    39. CallumPears on

Oh man this one hurts- loved him in basically everything he was in and it was always cool seeing him show up as a one-off like in Doctor Who and stuff

    40. I’m pretty gutted. Was an avid watcher of Buffy and I was a big fan of Giles on the show.

Some deaths make you feel incredibly mortal and this is definitely one of them.

I also found out today that he lived in my village and could often be seen down the local Co-op, so I’m doubly gutted I never bumped into him to tell him how awesome he was. 😑

      RIP.
