What a horrifying way to go
My condolences to his family.
27 years old….Good lord, he had his life ahead of him, still. Can’t imagine what his family is going through.
Words feel superfluous at the moment.
Well that answers that question.
A lot of people sounding too cocky about their chances against a black bear.

If they’re working up in remote northern areas, they should probably be given at least bear spray. Brutal way to go
A bear attack is probably in my top five ways I do not want to die. So awful.
I had a co-worker killed at the same location in 2005. They weren’t sure if it was by a black bear or wolves.

This is an unfortunate reminder that you need to have the means to defend yourself in the wild. Bear spray and an understanding of how to present and defend yourself against predators is a good start.

I want to assume that something was lost in translation here. If not, I mean I’m not sure what he expected?
The comments under the facebook posts are absolutely horrible

People need to have better training and life saving equipment on hand. What an awful way to go.
I knew him. He was a gem of a human being.
But my coworker (who doesn’t work out) thinks he could wrestle a black bear and win
Even against a trained fighter black bears are no joke
My older sister is a geologist and I worry about this happening to her too.
They should use this guy as an example for having safety training involving how to deal with animal attacks.
It may be rare, but even one death is still too many.

We were working 120 km south of where this happened. We heard that it was his second day on the job and he was working alone. On his first day he got lost. I don’t know if this is true or not.
