    1. Do they realize how stupid and entitled they sound when they bitch and whine about a sovereign country fortifying its defenses or taking care of its national interests?

That goes for both US and China as well other blocs which reddit is touchy about.

    2. Japan’s (as-of-yet still gentle) tilt towards remilitarization is a bit of a tragedy – the pacifism enshrined in the Japanese constitution is maybe *the* crown jewel of post-war liberalism, and as a humanist something I find incredibly beautiful. It should be – and largely is – a point of pride for the Japanese people.

But on the one hand, after 80 years of being *almost* a model member of the international community, it’s hard to say that Japan hasn’t earned the world’s trust when it comes to arming themselves. And in light of America’s isolationist turn and China’s increasing power, it’s hard to blame them for wanting to.

And then on the other hand, the *almost* there is a failure to properly acknowledge and atone for the crimes of the Imperial Army, the way (for example) Germany has. And since China was very much on the receiving end of those crimes, I’m sympathetic to Xi’s perspective.
