Way before the awful spanish colonization. The country was already a maritime trading hub with its neighboring countries courtesy of China, other SEA countries like Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and to some extent India, Middle East ( Ottoman ) hence the mixture of cultural influences and heritage like Islam and Hindu. So those colonizers and the narrative that the island country had no culture and were barbaric are simply not true. Ironically enough they were also the same people who gave a moniker name Las Islas de los Pintados the first time they landed in the central island region called Visayas bc of natives heavily covered in intricate, traditional tattoos before they renamed and forced down their king’s name.
