Oh no won’t someone please think of the tiny corporations like Netflix and Disney!

How could they ever afford this 😢

Edit: damn people really concerned about the giant companies in here.

      >Under the new rules, **broadcasters with annual Canadian broadcasting revenues above $25 million** will make meaningful contributions to the broadcasting system. No broadcasters below that threshold will be required to spend on Canadian content, which will reduce the overall regulatory burden in the system.

This really only affects the big players like Netflix and Prime, and 15% of their Canadian revenue, not global.

Just like everything else in Canada, the cost will be passed onto consumers, and we’ll end up paying for it.

    5. You know this is going to be just like a tariff – who is going to pay, you and I that’s who.

The way the title is worded, I thought they were going after Twitch streamers at first.

What a wild thing to do. A full time streamer can live literally anywhere in the world. Why would they choose to stay in Canada when a rule like this is in place? Damn near highway robbery.

And for each streamer they chase out that’s one less person spending money in Canada, one less person contributing to CPP, one less person paying income tax, etc.

Only on reddit are people more concerned about their streaming services than the absolute giant piles of money that these companies already have you by the balls for.

Oh great so I’ll be paying an extra 15% to fund crap I’ll never watch

Which will ultimately result in a 15% cost increase to consumers. What an idiotic decision by the CRTC, doing nothing but increasing inflation for Canadians.

    11. Time for people to start moving back to physical media and actually own the content they enjoy.

    12. I bet you that they are already over that number.

They are already filming shows in Canada since its cheaper.

People saying things like „now the price has to raise, here comes inflation“ etc. Are not considering that these companies are so massive, they could afford to pay this 100 times and never even come close to chipping off any of their money. If they decide to raise prices because of this, it is not to „cover the cost“ it is because they are greedy and cannot go without breaking profit records every quarter.

    14. Oh great I get to pay $45 a year so Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent can exist.

Netlix’s revenue for Canada and US last year was 17 billion, theres no way they are forking over 2 billion dollars to the Canadian government.

That’s a bit brain-dead of a policy. 15% is egregious. We don’t want these streaming platforms pulling out of the Canadian market and all we can watch is CBC Gem. What are they doing over there at CRTC? They need a reality check.

    17. MulletAndMustache on

Does our government actively want us to just have no tech companies in Canada?

    18. Dice_to_see_you on

who’s going to pay out the other canadians? or is this tax just going to grease politicians?

    19. National_Post483 on

How long before Trump starts to vomit all over the place? The timing of this could not have been worse. The CRTC should have been eliminated years ago.

    20. technical_poutine on

So we can expect Netflix to raise prices again to compensate for this.

    21. Localmanwhoeatsfood on

Netflix isn’t a streamer it’s a distributor of online content. Streamers are individual content creators on platforms like twitch.
