Elon Musk is the CEO, CTO, and chairperson of SpaceX.  I’m an armchair enthusiast and have a better understanding of our capabilities than he does.

Our economy is based on the best marketing and sales. Merit went out the window about the time Sagan gave this interview. He was an incredible man.

Every society that has ever existed has collapsed at some point, except the ones we have now which haven’t collapsed yet but also haven’t really been around that long in the scheme of things.

So it’s pretty easy to make this sort of prediction and then, when society collapses, say, „See? I told you so!“

Everyone on the Internet: „Yeah, everyone I don’t like is so stupid.“

For most of the history of science most folks have only had a limited grasp of science but they respected the fact that scientists did. Then big oil and big tobacco got busy undermining that and here we are.

    5. The UK has only ever had 1 STEM educated Prime Minister, the best one. The rest have not a clue, even on simple math. The same for the judiciary, mathematically innumerate, requiring expert witnesses (often not allowed) even for simple logic. Allows the courts to make shit up just like the politicians. All too interested in rhetoric than substance. The English curse.

“Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time—when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.”

I stabbed Carl in the butt with a plastic pirate sword at a Chinese restaurant (magic wok) in SoCal when I was like 6.

So yeah, I’m basically a scientist too.

    8. More people than every understand science and tech. This is also the first time in human history where the ignorant and uneducated have the ability to voice their opinions to the entire world

    9. It’s only going to get worse, now that we have LLMs to teach the kids to never bother grokking a thing.

Most scientists don’t have a fucking clue how society works.

Sagan has said a lot of dumb shit in his life. He didn’t even understand how tactical nukes worked.

it’s also quite impossible for a single person to have in depth knowledge in all fields of science and tech

The tragic truth is the scientific community shunned him through vitriol after the success of Cosmos

According to his widdow Ann Druyin
