    1. Why does it bother the government if people make a personal decision to leave a religion?

    2. yourstruly912 on

Not any religion, but a specific one. On the contrary it is encouraged for people of other religions to join that specific religion

C’mon, it’s not like these religions are brainwashed into kids from a young age and they didn’t get a say in whether they wanted in that religion…. is it?

That is a really misleading title. Leaving any religion is not illegal in these places like the title suggests, it’s leaving one specific religion.

although still very backwards that these laws even exist, the laws are not enforced in the gulf and south east asia.

    6. „one’s religion“, so basically Islam?
There is a 1000 Christians and about 5 Jews in Yemen. What happens if they leave their religions? Are they going to get killed?

Mayalysia abolished the death penalty. Now you get detained or fined. But the court will kinda prevent you from changing your religion in your I’d.

And this on Pakistan (where blasphemy is punishable by death):

While there was no specific formal law prohibiting apostasy,[195] the laws against apostasy have been effectuated through Pakistan’s blasphemy laws.[195] Under Article 295 of its penal code, any Pakistani Muslim who feels his or her religious feelings have been hurt, directly or indirectly, for any reason or any action of another Pakistani citizen can accuse blasphemy and open a criminal case against anyone.
      ….
The judge hearing the case, Saban Mohyuddin, rejected the idea that Iqbal should be sentenced to death for conversion, saying that Iqbal could only be sentenced if it could be proven he had committed blasphemy.

My guess anyone who rejects Islam, also rejects Allah and his Prophet, the definition of Islamic blasphemy.

The funny thing to me is until relatively recently in Ireland (like 20 years ago) it was actually virtually impossible to ‚leave‘ the Catholic Church if you were baptized, as in you actually couldn’t unregister yourself from the books. And traditionally speaking, at least for my parents generation, not going to mass or considering yourself irreligious would have you ostracized in the local community in every way imaginable.

Obviously these specific countries are completely backwards and brutal to their people, but some perspective is good sometimes. It’s not like the West doesn’t have a history of brutality and cruelty when it comes to religion and ideology. To me this map speaks more to ultra conservative cultures and lack of education more than anything.

But gwan fearless reddit warriors, hurr durr religion of peace etc

    11. Not for Malaysia. The country has never had such laws for apostasy, just fine and/or jail but it’s such a rare case to be jailed. Also, the country has abolished the death penalty so this map is inaccurate.
